Soul Searching...

Folk #1: Yes. "Grasping at straws." Trying to explain things to myself. And well, my self isn't buying it. I am a gnarly, recalcitrant, argumentative motherfucker. I can really annoy myself sometimes. Reflecting on my previous post, I realize, I have burned lots of my brain cells in the many decades of my time on the planet trying to understand Life, trying to figure out my place in the grand scheme of things, trying to take in, & do my best, to understand the grand scheme itself. Trying to figure out what can't really be figured, solving a puzzle that is ultimately unsolvable. But then again, I think, maybe understanding things is overrated, and besides the point? You know, finally, maybe I just have to get on with living, get on with experiencing the moment to moment, don't judge it,  just make it through day to day, without totally losing my shit, without becoming a callous, fucking, asshole, without lying to my self or others, without getting high on my own supply, without bullshitting myself and every last person in my orbit. Trying to be a "good person."  "A man of my word." Maybe too simple?  Not ambitious enough? But, you know, really, doing my best to not fuck up, not to hurt myself or other people, maybe that is the best this sometimes humble and sometimes not so humble pilgrim can hope to achieve in my own little lifetime? I mean, what the fuck?! And still, I wrestle with questions like: How do I get my head around living with all these cruel, stupid, soul-killing, energy-sucking creeps who live amongst us, and want to rule over us? I mean, it's a major fucking slog and vibe-killer watching, listening to & dealing with those zombie-ass, creeps. What to do with that burden? I don't rightly know. Tuning the assholes out, turning away from the carnage & mayhem, seems like a sensible & healthy thing, good for my mental health and well-being, but, then again, ignoring the over-amped, prodigiously ignorant, ravenous beast at the door doesn't seem all that smart either. It is a fucking, hairy, conundrum. How to tolerate the intolerable? How to co-exist with folks who don't give a flying fuck about anyone but themselves, folks who gladly harass, torture and kill other folks, often just for the living fuck of it?  A difficult question, no doubt about it.

Questions & Answers...

Folk #1: Asking questions. Looking for answers. Trying to figure things out. Trying to solve the Riddles, large & small, of Existence. It's a life-long quest. I have spent so much of my time on the planet occupied with this Don Quixote-like quest. Questioning everything. Battling windmills, battling the wind. What engages me? Whatever engages me.  Pretty much anything. Still, fairly quickly, I have learned there are hard limits to knowledge, the searching is endless, and any sense of "understanding," is often fruitless. I find myself lost in a cul de sac, or in a hall of mirrors; a confounding zone where the questions multiply, they bounce around, they collide with each other; bits & bites of knowledge slowly accumulate, but solid & clear answers refuse to offer themselves up. Life; it's complicated. Seems that the more you look, the more see, often, the less you know, there is the uncertainty principle, the more you explore a subject, any subject, the murkier things get when you delve deep enough into the dark nougat center. You end up with lots of knowledge, data, facts, kernels of truth, often contadictory, partial, arbitary. Understanding is a fleeting chimera, an always vanishing unicorn. Of course, silly me, I am not the greatest questioner. My limits are oh so obvious. Even, & especially, to me. Being fully Human demands a disciplined self-awareness & a hard-won humility. Mystery is everywhere. Yes. We are bound by Mystery. Or maybe bound & gagged by Mystery. I suppose that's ok, or, you know, it has to be ok, one learns to live with the limits of knowledge, the limits of understanding, the limits of reason, and the all-pervading reality of a nebulous Mystery at the heart of everything. Making sense of not making sense. There is a vast Cloud of Unknowing looming over us all. When you are at your wit's end, grasping, grappling, fumbling for answers, an all-purpose, very handy response comes to mind. Take a question, any question, one that starts with a simple, "Why...?" Ha.  Aye. Right?  Tricky. The Belfast Cowboy might say: "There is no why, it just is..." There's the rub. You may come up with million plausible-sounding reasons for certain phenomena. You do you best trying to be reasonable. Still, the cold, hard, funny & obvious response would be, could be, & often is: "Who knows? I mean, you know, shit happens."

Through Someone Else's Eyes...

Folk #1: Funny. I always knew I was an Excitable Boy (hat-tip to Warren Zevon). I bumped into an acquaintence yesterday on the path. I hadn't seen him for a few months, he had had an existential health crisis, and had been sidelined for awhile. I had no idea of the drama he had gone through, nor the impression I have made on this person over a number of random conversations on the lakefront. Sure. We've had some deep, philosophical exchanges, engaged in loopy dialogue about pretty much anything that happened to float into our heads. Some cool insights, book recommendations & laughter too. I was surprised to find that I touched this person deeply to the core. I seem to have inspired him, and challenged him, and our conversations were often on his mind, even when he was in hospital recovering from heart surgery. It was wild to hear him describe my character, to see myself through his eyes, his consciousness, & his very unique sensibility. He described me as person on "a mission," passionate, engaged, firey and energetic, maybe a bit of a creative evangelist. Ha. I thought some of that rang true, and some of that was illusion. Just so happens I was reeling yesterday, on the ropes, barely going through the motions of the day. questioning everything; my purpose, my being,  I mean I was reeling a bit, "Faking it to make it," through the day in one piece. We walked togeter, taking in the beautiful day. Our conversation brought me back to the moment, and I could feel energy flowing back into my body. Funny how that happens. We finally reached a point on the path where we were to go seperate ways, we hugged each other, two grown men, showing true emotion and comradery. It was a touching moment. Then, it was onto the next big thing, I knew it was out there somewhere, just around the next corner... I mean, you know, maybe...

Disassociate...

Yes. The smart play? Disassociate yourself from the Epstein/Asshole class that is permeating our culture. There is only one solution: vote all the assholes out. A total house-cleaning. The same with the out of touch elites trying to "overlord" us all.  Shame & shun them. Banish them from polite society. No mercy. Be bold & brave. Take to the streets. Stand up and be counted. Our day will come. No doubt. Then a thorough, merciless reckoning.

Multiculturalism is Good...

Folk #1: - Multiculturalism. Of course it is good. Go to any major American City (for instance: Chicago, New York, LA, San Fransciso, San Antonio, Atlanta, etc) and see the benefits of people from all corners of the planet co-existing.  Why are these cities such fabulous places to visit & to live in? Multiculturalism. Enjoy the food, the music, the vibrancy of humanity in all it's many forms and flavors. Cruise the streets of Chicago, a rainbow of peoples from everywhere: Latin American, South & North American, Thai, Indian, Polish, Irish, German, African, Russian, Ukrainian, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, British, French, Native Americans, I mean, everything, all at once, you name it, you will find it here. It's a fabulous glimpse of the splendiferous wonderment of humanity around the planet. Surprises everywhere. Anyone railing against multiculturalism is a fool, a creep, a white supremacist, a racist, a fascist, a cretin, an anti-humnanist sicko. Oh yeah, you know, prominent creeps like Rubio, Trump, Musk, Miller, Etc. Retrograde assholes all. They should be shamed, shunned & banished from society. Fuck them all.

People in the Streets Demanding a Better Way & Day...

 

Folk #1: Well the above chart is quite encouraging. Protests against the Trump Administration, and his policies of cruel and unusual punishment against the Citizens of the USA continue to grow in number. "Could be well over 15 million" Americans in over 40,000 protests across USA.

We are are supposed to be the fat & sassy ones, bored out of our skulls, stupid, unconcerned, snorting opioids and betting on sports on our smartphones, but, no, well ok, yes, there are lots of folks occupying their time like that, but still a sizable portion of us are also outraged, very deeply unhappy and concerned about the state of state. And willing to take to the streets to demonstrate our feelings.

Over here, my partner & I have participated in a few of these protest ourselves. It has been a very gratifying thing to do. A declaration that this is not acceptable, not the America we know & love. Our fellow common ones are showing  us all a better way. Fuck Trump. Fuck ICE. We need a reboot. Resistance in all it's many splendored forms is a beautiful thing indeed.

Where Will I Find the Wonder Today?

Folk #1: What to write about this morning? I have reached deeply into my own calm center. Zen, indeed. I switch on my Chromebook, and check in with the over-amped, raving, drooling, lunatic mob, those crazed folks running the U.S. Government, and those stilted cretins who are still cheering them on. I suppose I need to know what fresh fuckery now? It's admittedly a weird form of entertainment. Observing these cruel, stupid, corrupt, yes, evil people and their thrashings of idiocy. They seem desperate. The louder they cry, whine, gnash their teeth, the more they seem ineffective, clueless, out of touch with the real, seriously sick & twisted. Not healthy Humans. I sip my coffee, listening to Jason Molina and The Magnolia Electric Co. on the stereo. Jason was a troubled soul (I listen to him sing and it's a sad, beautiful, inspiring thing), who laid down some amazing music: "And I am proof that the heart is a risky fuel to burn, Yeah, we are proof that the heart is a risky fuel to burn..."

Yes, we are all that smart proof, and as Randy Newman sang in another context: "Burn river, Burn..."

I imagine the hammer coming down on these crazed folks, the hammer of Justice & Truth. Maybe it's a healthy fantasy of mine. I still believe. I can imagine a better world, a better iteration of Human. Is it a pipe dream? I don't think so, I'm not sucking on a pipe. Give me some cold, hard, facts, some grains of truth, and I can run down a new scenario. The cruel idiots may be the loudest voices at the moment, but I do believe it's all empty, hollow, soul-killing b.s. It won't last. It's really the death rattles of a dying movement.

The Zen in me means I am not attached to any one of my dreams or ideas. They all flow thru me like water. Still dark here, but I know the sun will soon peek over the horizon. Announcing a new day in Paradise. I wonder where I will find the wonder today?

"What if I Could be Totally ZEN & Totally Happy, Anyway?"

Folk #1: Let's say, for the sake of argument, that things just aren't going your way. You seem out of sync with your life, & with the times you find yourself living in. You feel like you are flailing & failing at every turn. And you see the corrupt, stupid & evil folks around you thriving, living it up like there is no tomorrow. It's a bit disheartening & frustrating. It feels like a sentence, a judgement is being imposed on you from an Angry God, a God that you don't even believe in. "Out of sorts," is one way of putting it. Alienated is another. What to do? Beats me, remember it is me who is flailing & failing. Still, for some unknown reason, I feel a bold, uncommon, frankly, ridiculous impulse of fire & defiance welling up from deep inside my being. I find myself declaring: "Fuck it." & "Fuck them." I vow to myself to have a rethink, to embark on a disciplined program of renewal. I play Devil's Advocate & ask myself:"What if I could be totally ZEN, and totally happy, anyway?"

Epstein Scandal, the Godzilla of Scandals...

 

A picture for the ages. Pam Bondi the Attorney General of the U.S. another Trump lackey, still covering up the Epstein scandal. Those folks with their hands raised are victims and witnesses who have never been deposed. Bondi is doing her best to cover things up for the rich and powerful folks implicated in the scandal. The is the conspiracy of conspiracies. It's vast, and ever-expanding. I don't think this is going away anytime soon. It is too big at this point, it is like the Godzilla of Conspiracies. Too many unanswered questions, too many victims, too many perpetrators who have still not faced any consequences. The more evidence comes out, the more folks implicated, the more dastardly and counter-productive the coverup becomes. Yes. Wealthy folks in every industry, and government officials in every office. The protection racket is crumbling. I was always a bit skeptical of this monster of conspiracies, but it just won't evaporate or die. It appears to consume anyone getting in it's way. The more you look, the more you see. It expands like a corrosive, deadly virus, a reptile like monster consuming all in it's way. A total cleanse and a day of reckoning is required. The cold blade of truth must have it's moment. Stay tuned.

Yes. Self-Care in the Face of the Bullshit...

 Folk #1: "Self-care." Very important. Especially if you are tuned in to the Global situation: a crazy-ass planet, populated, & over-run by a crazy-ass species. We think we are so goddamned smart, and privileged & entitled. What a joke. It's on us.

So, yes, we feel obligated to pay attention, it is part of the job of being a Human Being, but it is an energy-suck. We must be smart about using our energy wisely, it is not an infinite resource, often we must pull our energy back in, focus on clearing, cleansing, meditating, letting go of all the stupid, toxic, evil shite flowing past and over us.

A disciplined retreat & stepping back. It is important, and essential to occupy ourselves, to fortify ourselves with healthy food in it's various forms. Food for the body & the spirit. For us, it's always plant-based, organic food, plus, of course, the food for the spirit: music, literature, poetry, novels, engaging fictions, and an endless search for intelligent  life on the planet. 

Finding a spot of peace, gratitude, wonder, joy, despite the crazy-ass lunacy.

We are All Bad Bunny...

Folk #1: Thinking a bit more about the Bad Bunny moment (see previous post). 13 mins exactly. I do think it was an important event. Definitely better than the game. Could it be a tipping point, a sea change, a cultural marker, an event that alters the direction & spirit of the zeitgeist? I don't know. Maybe. "A change of consciousness can happen in an instant." Pop Culture can be quite the powerful force for change. Some say it was Levi's Blue Jeans and R&R that killed Communism in Russia.

Bad Bunny brought Puerto Rico to San Francisco, and to the wider world. He sang in Spanish, which totally flew past me, but his performance was powerful & undeniable. There was beauty, history, celebration, ingenuity, diversity, color, power, compassion, humor, vibrancy, in every move and gesture.

The symbolism was powerful and cleansing. A totally different idea of what it means to be alive on the planet right now. Since the words were just another element of the music, the performance actually gained in power and effect. It was a healing, a clearing, a blazing affirmation of humanity in all it's multiplicity. 

We all come from different places, we all have different faces and histories. But, we are here, together, right now, and our differences are a beautiful strength. Bad Bunny and his collaborators showed us how to live together, in the moment, embracing each other. Thriving on the beautiful, vibrant energy of being alive with heart, compassion, empathy.  You know, without saying it: Woke 2.0.

A powerful pop cultural moment, no doubt. Such a stark contrast in oppostition to the dark, ugly, divisive, corrosive, MAGA abomination. It is easy to choose sides. We are all Bad Bunny now! 

Bad Bunny: "Together We Are America."

 

Turns out Bad Bunny is Good Bunny. Funny. Singing in Spanish. Delicious. "Together We Are America." Who knew that would be a "radical" statement? When Bad Bunny says "America" it includes all of Latin America, & a North America that includes Canada too. Of course, it's a radically perfect contrast to MAGA's creepy dark vision. Yes. Puerto Ricans are U.S. Citizens. How refreshing to see happy, creative, beautiful people celebrating a vision of a joyously diverse America. Oh, yeah, that is the America most of us want to live in, the America that we all Love. What's super funny, & tragic too, our President is an old, racist, fuck who is living in the wrong country & the wrong century. Maybe he could do us all a favor and choke out on his own hate, bile, & racist-vomit?! That would be sweet karma, indeed.

Folk #1: What have you got? I am against it. Put me in the camp with the resistors, the common folk. This Oligarchical Billionaire class, yes the Epstein Class, is poison to our democracy. We need champions for decency, compassion, love & democracy. Radical measures will be required. Abolishing ICE will be an essential first step. Dismantling DHS too. Reordering government. Donald Trump has again descended to another Circle of Hell. The Circle reserved for the Gutter Racists. We knew he had it in him. I mean, some of us from the start knew that he was always a stone-cold racist. When all the other masks fall from his face, the cold, dark, ugly heart of racism emerges. Just when you think he has hit bottom with his ugly words & deeds, he finds another level of disgusting, malevolent behaviour. 

What is admirable about most of us Americans, we are coming to the aid & defense of the brown & black folks amongst us, the trans & gay ones too, those under attack from this criminal/racist/fascist adminstration. We know that the folks under attack are friends, neighbors, collegues, fellow Human Beings who deserve respect, honor, love & support. That's the way you make a better Union.

It is how you create a vibrant, thriving Democracy. How do we make our country decent again? The decent ones stand up and say, "This is not acceptable. We reject this with all our Hearts, Heads, Spirits aligned." We, of course, are so much better than this gutter racist trash. We can, and must, lean to our Better Angels.

Maybe the 1st Crack in the Firmament of Idiocy?

Folk #1: Is it wrong to "Try Harder, Actualize Collapse!" That is a phrase written in the cement on a sidewalk in my neighborhood. Methinks it's not wrong at all. Watching the implosion of Bitcoin on the market ticker and enjoying every last bit of the plunge. Bad karma? Methinks not. Bozos getting what they deserve; it's just natural. I'm actually slightly giddy about their comeuppence. Why? It's funny & gratifying to see greedy idiots who invested in clear, worthless stupidity, being completely humbled & bankrupted. And thinking maybe this particular plunge is just the first crack in the firmament? Maybe AI-associated stocks next? Pretty sure collapse is coming. Gravity, common sense, & reality can be ignored only for so long. It's about time that cooler, smarter, more intelligent heads prevail. And, well, no surprise Trump's approval ratings are collapsing too. Turns out murder, kidnapping, caging human beings in concentration camps are not very popular here in the USA. That is a good thing indeed. We are trapped in an ugly era, but there are glimmers of the real kicking back. So, yeah, Trump, Bitcoin & AI all wish-casting and vibes. Another way of saying total B.S. They are intertwined in their astonishing idiocy. And when the wishes turn to ashes, and good vibes turn decidedly bad, there is the big reveal: there's nothing behind the curtain, nothing to prop up that shit anymore. Yes, try harder to encourage the actual collapse, then it will be time to renew, recharge, refresh. A new day, a new way. Yes. Actually, quite good...

Murk, Muck, Mire...

I am reminded that much of Life is navigating, swimming in, traversing, the murk, the muck, the mire, the mud of a very physical reality. We are stuck in a realm of messiness; there will be blood, bruises, & in extreme cases, broken skin & bones. Extreme weather conditions, call for extreme measures of insulation & protection. Everything is harder, every step, every move, every breath you take is an adventure & a challenge. Extra energy is required just to strap on your boots to face the long days & nights. The stuff of Life. Simple days of outrageous fortune, the slings & arrows of existence; the floatsum, jetsum &  hurly-burly.

How Convenient...

Folk #1: Speaking of Conspiracy Theories (see previous post), I have always been skeptical about those conspiracy-minded folks pushing the idea that Jeffery Epstein didn't commit suicide in jail, but was murdered. It all seemed so cliche. Still, the more we learn about the circumstances leading up to finding his lifeless body laying on the floor of his jail cell, the more murder seems plausible, and maybe even most likely. Funny. Facts are funny things. The prison guards were sleeping, the security cameras were mysteriously turned off at the exact critical time, Epstein's body was found on the floor with wounds to his neck, and according to the leading journalist who really broke the case early on, Julie K. Brown, the reporter closer to this story than anyone else, Epstein feared for his life, left a secret message in a book, and was preparing to finally "name names." It all sounds like a million other stories we've heard and seen in millions of TV shows, movies, & graphic novels. But, still, just because it all sounds like a very cliched, well-worn script, it doesn't mean it isn't true.  Murder. As David Foster Wallace once pointed out, cliches are cliches because they often are true. We now know that many, many powerful & famous people hung out with Epstein doing god knows what. God & Epstein knew the truth of what was going on his island lair. Those powerful folks certainly had good cause to want Epstein to remain silent. How convenient that he ends up dead before he could spill the beans on all those visitors, friends & clients who visited him. It sure seems like Julie K. Brown believes that Epstein was murdered, and if she believes it, well, that's good enough for me too. Will we ever know who murdered Jeffery Epstein? Who knows? Is it gonna be one of those stories, where everything is all wrapped up in a neat little ball, or, is it gonna be the kind of tale that leaves us all grappling around in the a murky, uncertain darkness? "It's Chinatown, Jake..."

The Mother of All Conspiracies...

Folk #1: Over the weekend, a little band of friends were discussing conspiracy theories. Not to get specific (I am not a conspiracy-theorist at heart), the conspiracies were various, wide-ranging, head-spinning, all-consuming, wildly-ridiculous & sort of funny. Turns out many of the most prominent conspiracy theories actually link up with each other. They span decades, cities, agencies, bad actors, celebrities, prominent & famous people, substances, entities & personalities from all walks of life: JFK, Marilyn Monroe, RFK, Charles Manson, LBJ, Epstein, FBI, Magic Bullet, White Christian Nationalists, Elvis, LSD, Jack Ruby, UFO's, Oswald, Hoover, Helter-Skelter, MLK Jr, Drug-therapy, Debbie Reynolds, Trump, Senators, Ketamine, Reps, Space Aliens, Opes Dei,  Mar A Lago, Governors, KKK, Nazis, Nixon, Cocaine, CIA, Henry Ford, Hitler, Malcolm X, Viet Cong, Mossad, Stalin, Arab Sheiks, Castro, Big-Foot, Lindbergh, WMD, Musk, Space X, paranomoral phenomena, the Yeti, JFK Jr, Russia, NSA, Skull & Bones, Miltiary Industrial Complex, Fascists, Bush/Cheney, Torture Regime, Butler, Putin, ESP, Lincoln, Gitmo, Pharmaceuticals, Iraq, Black Ops, Crypto, Disinfo, AI, Mafia, Fox News, Black Sites, Cloud-seeding,  Abu Graib, Bin Laden, Space Lasers, Hypnotism, KGB, the Illuminati, military-grade weapons, Blackwater, Secret Societies, Zombies, Vampires. There is ONE VAST CONSPIRACY: Folks (bad actors all) with money & power trying to keep & to grow their wealth at any cost, doing their damnedest to get away with whatever they can get away with to the detriment of everyone else on the planet. A simple formulation: the filthy rich ones, rule & fuck over everyone else. Bullet holes, dead bodies, strangled dreams, broken promises, accumulating and piling up into a great heap of a Tower of Conspiratorial Babel, an edifice built on the bones & exploded hearts of the young, the pure, the innocent; dark deeds, deadly lies, brutal skullduggery. You know if you believe in all of the conspiracy theories, you believe in none of them, and still you are left with one ugly truth: the haves vs. the have nots, the powerful vs the weak, the rich vs the poor. It's eternal to the Human realm. Yep. We watch it all unfold day by day. We are the common folk, those standing around, gaping at the mayhem, we are the dupes, the marks, the saps, the doofusses, the folks walking around like holy fools wondering to ourselves "What the fuck just happened?!"

What If?

Folk #1: What if you could banish Fear, Doubt & Worry from your life? Just do a quick cleanse,  a simple ritual,  & let all that shit go? What if you decided to be Happy? What if you chose a Life of Kindness, Gentleness, Humilty? What if you Graviated to, and Cultivated, Intelligence, Honor, Courage? What if you threw yourself into & relished Hard Work & Discipline? What if you cherished the things you do have, and refused to concern yourself with the things that you don't? What if you were always onto the next thing? A new project, a cool idea, a journey, an adventure? What if you filled your Life doing the things you Love to do as often you could? What if you filled your Life with Love and turned away from the Haters? That would be a Good Life...

A Sweet Turn of Fortune...

 Folk #1: The worm turns. Funny. Up ungodly early, but slept well. Is it CRAZY for me to think that something is happening out there? A tiny glimmer of hope? Can't really explain why. Is it possible that GRAVITY & REALITY are rearing their heads once again, and slowly, almost imperceptibly making their first tentative steps to a comeback? Wouldn't that be just a perfect plot twist? I am no longer a betting man, those days are long gone, I get no kick from wagering my hard-earned cash anymore, but, if I were a betting man, I'd put a princely sum of the chances that cooler heads, the better folks, the kinder, gentler, folks will carry us to a new day. I don't know, it's just a feeling this morning. Can't put my gnarly finger on it, but that feeling is floating around me like a happy little sun. Expect lots of crashing and gnashing of teeth from the Fascists, Nazis, bullies, creeps, assholes. I do believe their days of reckoning are coming. Yes. We can get past this nasty time, move forward with a new purpose. Maybe we will actually be better for it too? Ha. That would be an uncommonly sweet turn of fortune.

A Torrent of Terribleness...

Makes one want to retreat, abdicate from the species, spend time gazing up a the sky, deciphering messages in the clouds, hanging out with the small & pretty creatures, communing with the solemn, wise old trees & rocks. Killing time with the best and brightest non-human associcates. The Human Species; a tricky, complicated, disappointing, vicious, greedy, selfish, rapacious, & extremely silly, lot. Some days you just want to resign from the ranks of the rank. Where do I turn in my decoder ring, and operator's manual?

The Grifter Era...

Folk #1: When we recall this era, and well, Dear Pilgrim, if we survive, and have the luxury of looking back, you will be forgiven if you try your damnedest not to recall this fucking lame-ass, era, I mean, I am sure we can all understand why you'd want to erase every last vestige of this era from your reeling, gobsmacked, deeply faltering, & troubled consciousness; we will recall it as the era when everyone fucking cooked their brains on over-amped, shit-sandwich-type bullshit enthusiastically foisted upon us by rich & powerful grifters, scumbags, moral cretins, greedy fucks, super-sized-assholes, corruptly creepy criminals who ruled & lorded over us, stealing all the perks & attention, sucking all the oxygen out of the atmosphere, and filling our heads & hearts with gaseous, noxious, toxic bilge. Compromised weasels lying to us, in all major areas of our culture: business, media, show-business, politics, etc. Searching for Intelligent Life on the Planet is something I do every morning, checking in on the news of the day, searching for those vanishing chimeras: Intelligence, Humor, Grace, Beauty, Humility, Goodness. Let me tell you, those qualities are rare indeed, going extinct moment to moment. We live in the land of manufactured, gaudily-packaged, hard to digest shite.

A World Gone Wrong, Totally Out of Our Control...

Folk #1: Another maddening reality we deal with day to day. My partner & I have a tendency to want to solve problems. We see a World Gone Wrong, and we try to come up with creative solutions to all the "wrongness," we see everywhere. We spend lots of our time discussing events in the world, trying understand "what's happening," and trying to come up with creative ways to fix or solve these most likely unsolvable problems. Or maybe the problems aren't totally unsolvable, but solving or fixing them would require great collective action from vast quantities of humans.  Collective action well beyond our own personal capabilities. You know it's a World Gone Wrong ,Totally & Out Of Our Control. So the talking and solving is just a sort of fruitless game we play with our own brains. It's not a very satisfying game, often it's frustrating & disheartening. I suppose, at least we are using our brain power, exercising our thinking muscles, being fully aware, alive, awake moment to moment. But it's a certain cross to bear, no doubt. Living with the Wrongness, not letting it destroy us. You know we also play this game with our own very personal problems, we do better when we focus close to home. Again, there are some aspects of our own personalities that need fixing, and eternal attention. And who and what we are has been shaped by experiences and realities beyond our control, but we can do the work of improving ourselves, identifying problems, coming up with solutions, new ways of being. It's a determind process of unfolding, it probably never ends, until the end. Living with ourselves in this world is a constantly evolving adventure. Anyway, we are left to our own devices, being good, doing good. Hoping for the best. Putting our Faith in Good Thoughts & Right Action, no matter how paltry, and close to the bone these gestures mean in the grand scheme of things. Being Human is not an easy thing...

Left with the Buddy System...

Folk #1: It starts early in life, and I think the feeling continues to grow as we experience the world and the people in it. We are truly stuck in our own heads, in our own bodies, perceiving and acting in the world as  unique entities. Sure, at the same time, we are constantly checking in with others, there is the social nature of our human existence, and we are always in a social contract & in an on-going, never-ending conversation with our fellow humans. None of us are truly an island, or alone, unless we have totally fallen off the cliff.  Total isolation is a certain road to madness.  Still we are all on the spectrum: social or anti-social? For most of us there is the day to day query: "I'm okay, are you okay?" Always checking in, verifying, testing the waters, sampling the sanity of our fellow human beings. Lately, and who knows, maybe it's always been so, there seems to be a major break in the fabric of our collective existence. Our consensus reality lacks consensus. And the breach is not a small crack, but a wide, yawning, canyon. Folks just don't see eye to eye. We aren't even living in the same reality. Events happen and folks can't even agree on basic facts. It's quite disturbing & yes, alienating. Also, there is this distinct feeling & impression that all of our institutions are failing us. Logic, rationality, reason, and good cheer seem like quaint fictions. It also feels like no one is truly in charge, (and they aren't), there is no big daddy looking out for us, and those power-hungry folks who do assume the levers of the machinery are corrupt, stupid, cruel, greedy. Many of these folks actually intend to do us harm. Paranoia! So, there is a bit of a retreat, a turning inward, leading to the insight that we truly are on our own. Now, if we are lucky, we know & live with like-minded folks, folks who we can pull close, folks who look out for us, and who we look out for too. We offer each other a helping hand in normal times, as well as in times of deep, over-powering stress. All we have is our own agency & the agency of our buddies. It is the buddy system lifestyle. Now of course, we can make this buddy system a closely held thing, or more admirably, and idealistically, a super-expansive, world-embracing kind of thing. You know, following in the footsteps of that great teacher and moral philosopher, cultural icon, sweater-wearing hero, Mister Rodgers?! "Please, won't you be my neighbor?" Yes, indeed, be a neighbor to the Universe. Hmmm... but what about those others? What about the intolerant ones, the deplorables who live amongst us, those who want to hurt us and hurt those we love? Live & let live is a nice idea, but of course, the evil-doers should be shunned, shamed, brought to justice, and made to face up to the consequences of their actions. Day to day, it is best to avoid those folks, I mean, avoid them like the plague. Still, being neighborly with the neighbors? That's the way to do it.

Justice for Alex & Renee...

Murdering (white), American Citizens in the street? Maybe a bridge too far for most of us? Alex Pretti and Renee Good died for our sins. The heavy hand of the oppressors pulled the trigger, murdered them in cold blood for all the world to see, then lied shamelessly, baldly, ridiculously, horrifically, and expected us all to happily swallow the lies, to nod our heads, and walk away, and bow down to the power of evil.

Thankfully, the heroes of Minneapolis have stood strong, smartphones at the ready, brave & courageous folks willing to risk life & limb standing together in sub-zero temps, protecting each other, documenting the atrocities, witnessing and testifying against these crimes against humanity. 

It is easy to see that this is a battle of good vs. evil unfolding in the streets. Choosing sides is essential. I can't imagine choosing the side of the murdering oppressors. Alex and Renee will not be forgotten. And those committing these atrocities, those lying about them, must be held accountable. Justice for Alex and Renee. It is the only way forward...

Eyes Wide Open to the Horrors of Oppression...

 

Yes. Will Stancil is one of many, many citizens standing up, observing, documenting, witnessing the atrocities & horrors committed by ICE & Border Control in the streets of Minneapolis. Brave, courageous, righteous American Citizens, standing up for their rights, their community, their city, their state, their country. Armed with Empathy & Courage. Outfitted with outdoor gear to survive sub-zero temps. Smart-phones at the ready, making sure all of us can see & witness for ourselves, the cold truth. Yes, in this case, and in many, many others too, the smartphone, set to record, is a definitve act of defiance, a weapon of truth. The lies told about these murders in the street, were easily & quickly disproven by countlesss videos from many angles. The lies were immediately exposed, and evaporated, in the face of the simple act of documenting the moment to moment, bearing witness, by common folks who really, really cared.  Aware, Alive, Awake. Woke to the max. Courage & Empathy on record mode.

What a brilliant, shining example of People Power. Democracy in action, in the streets, folks coming to each other's aid, braving the elements, and the hostile forces of evil, that have been unleashed by this lawless, lying administration. Here is where hope, optimism, a better day, and a better way resides. In the hearts and minds of those willing to stand up and say, "No," to tyranny, murder, lying, brutality, inhumanity. Stronger together. Eyes wide open to the horrors of oppression. We stand with Minneapolis, scarred forever with  the searing tragedy of the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti burned deeply into our brains.

Paul Krugman: MONSTERS  - "It has been clear for a long time, to anyone willing to see, that the people running the federal government — Trump, Miller, Noem, Bovino and more — are monsters. It has been equally obvious that ICE and the Border Patrol are now filled with sadistic thugs. Yet many people — almost the entire GOP, everyone serving in the Trump administration, some Democrats, a significant part of the media — were too cowardly to admit the obvious."

Their son was murdered, executed by Border Patrol/ICE on the street in Minneapolis yesterday. And the adminstration lies shamelessly, "sickening lies," lies about a cold-blooded murder. There are many, many videos, many angles, there are eye-witness accounts, no doubts, believe your eyes, a young man, immobile on the ground, shot multiple times, helpless in the street. The parents released a statement. Heartbreaking. Remember each & every person who lies about this murder. Never forget the shameless, disgusting lies & those who are telling them.  Those defending this murder have blood on their hands too. They are co-conspirators to murder. They should all be charged, tried, and brought to Justice. Crimes against humanity...

Now, finally, even some cautious, cowardly (?), "centrist," Democratic Senators can see the truth with their own eyes. Next step, refuse to fund the Department of Homeland Security. It is an abomination, and a tool of oppression, murder, kidnapping, brutalizing & terrorizing human beings...

Standing Up Against ICE in Sub-Zero Temps!

Will Stancil describes himself as "a Minnesota Guy." He is pretty damn woke, he is politcally active, he has been roaming the streets of Minneapolis, documenting the horrors, and the terror unleashed by the ICE goons.

Yesterday there was a massive protest against ICE in Minneapolis. The good folks are rising against the oppression. They are common folk, brave, courageous, admirable American citizens, standing up for their rights, and for each other. It so inspiring, powerful and good to see the people giving a damn, taking a stand. ABOLISH ICE NOW!

BTW - I am re-reading  one of Roberto Bolano's great novels The Savage Detectives. It seems so of the moment right now, even though it is based on experiences of young poets in the 1970's & 1980's. It is the  story of people searching and reaching for meaning in Mexico City and beyond. It's the kind of novel I love, young idealistic, searchers, wanderers, dreamers, people looking to be onto something, and at the same time, they are confronting conformity, oppression & standing up in opposition to vast retrograde, life-killing forces.  

These lines resonated with me last night during my late read (page 372): "... the heart of the matter is knowing whether evil (or sin or crime or whatever you want to call it) is random or purposeful. If it's purposeful, we can fight it, it's hard to defeat, but we have a chance, like two boxers in the same weight class, more or less. If it's random, on the other hand, we're fucked, and we'll just have to hope that God, if He exists, has mercy on us. And that's what it all comes down to."

So yeah, I do think this present evil is "purposeful" it resides in very flawed, cruel, brutal and corrupt hearts & heads, and we know who to hold to account and who to fight, and who to bring to Justice.  Yes. Indeed. We do...

The thing is to make it...

Here in the Midwest the weather is God, sometimes a benevolent God, I am thinking of those sunny, blue sky days in Spring, Summer & Fall, when the temps are liveable, and the days and nights carress you. Going out, & meeting the moment can be joyful, pleasurable, and life-affirming.

It's not like that here, now, in the depths of a deep, bone-chilling winter, & polar vortex episode. We are in the middle of the deep freeze. Harsh, brutal temps 0 to -20 with the wind kicking up. God is acting as if he/she despises humanity, and, you know, if that's case, it's understandable. To venture outside is to venture into hostile territory. Everything is harder. Everything is cold, brittle, clunky, every step is a potential misadventure.

Up early, and I figure I am not going anywhere today. Being forced to be Zen today. Take one's cues from this icy, frost-bite wielding God, and lay low in a warm  & friendly home. This Winter God is very Old Testament; a cold, unforgiving, unyielding, quite brutal God who probably hates the frailty & idiocy of humanity. Yikes.

You know, I am agnostic when it comes to believing in a higher power. I mean, of course there are higher powers, we are surrounded by them, non-human powers that rule & guide us. But they are mysterious, can't beseech them, you know like gravity, evolution, energy, vibes, and the complexity & uncomprehending nature of existence, etc. I think there is Mystery embedded in everything, but beyond that, I am kind of like "who knows?!" 

But it is easy to believe in the weather. Or you don't have believe in it, just experience it's unforgiving power. It just is what it is, and it is God-like in it's glory, it rules, and we must deal with it day to day. That's the challenge of living. Making it through in the light of unbridled benevolence or malevolence. No sense in taking it personally. The thing is to make it to the next day, and the one after that too.

Yes. Of Course, Horrified & Embarrassed...

Yes. We should all be horrified & embarrassed that Donald Trump speaks for the USA in Davos Switzerland. Paul Krugman is brillaint and spot-on once again.

"I listened to Trump’s Davos speech with fear: How much damage will this demented, vindictive individual do to America and the world? I also felt a deep sense of shame: What is wrong with my country, that we put someone like this in a position of unprecedented power?

As the whole world watched, the president of the United States (God help us) repeatedly referred to Greenland, which he is willing to blow up NATO to acquire, as Iceland. Don’t dismiss this as trivial: if any previous president had been that befuddled, the whole press corps would have been howling about senility and demanding that he step down.

And of course Trump’s press secretary insisted that he didn’t say what we all saw and heard him say.

Trump also repeatedly displayed his trademark willful ignorance, for example when talking about renewable energy. While berating Europe for using wind energy, he admitted that China also has big wind farms — someone must have showed him pictures — but declared that

They put up a couple of big wind farms, but they don’t use them. They just put them up to show people what they could look like. They don’t spin, they don’t do anything.

In reality, China accounts for almost 40 percent of total world generation of electricity from wind power, substantially more than Europe.

Beyond confusion and ignorance, Trump delivered menace..."

Yes. We are trapped in clutches of the worst of the worst people on the planet. If you aren't horrified & embarrassed, you either aren't listening, or you are well beyond help.  Mercy, mercy me...

Bewitched & Bewildered...

Folk #1: A sentence from a friend - "Live by the Dream, Die by the Dream." I suppose that is close to the mark on what my credo, or code of conduct, might be. If you are in the biz of dreaming, you know, many, maybe even most of those dreams will evaporate into nothingness. Still, in the depths of the down & out, always conjuring up the next dream. It's a funny existence. The more I know myself, the more I realize I am perpetually amused & bemused.

Star-crossed = "pleasantly entertained or diverted/marked by confusion or bewilderment." Yes. Makes for a mildly entertaining existence.

The other tool in my kit-bag: Always on a mission. Onto the next thing. There is a lot of wreckage behind me. Crashed plans, broken eggs on the pavement, dreams combusting, but, surprisingly I seem to always be moving forward. Sure, I hit bottom from time to time. Can barely speak. Energy lost in the breeze. But I always bounce. At least that has been the pattern up to now.

I am bewitched & bewildered by the world. No doubt. I turn to humor, and a certain detachment from all things human. I get it. The Universe isn't about me. I am just being, doing, recalibrating...

Don't Cry for Me Greenland...

Ok. As a chorus of a song, it is pretty damn clunky: "Don't cry for me... Greenland?!" Doesn't really fly off the tongue.

So now, this born & bred American Boy finds himself rooting against the clod, the idiot, the madman, the big, fat crybaby, who just can't get over not winning the Nobel Peace Prize, and now wants to claim Greenland for himself, just because... 

This all can't really be that stupid, can it?! Yes, dear reader, it can.

The Danes (a NATO ally), are deploying to Greenland to defend the land from the clutches of the idiot. Anyone with half-a-brain left, finds themselves on the side of the Danes, no doubt.

You are forgiven, & you should forgive yourself too. If your brain feels like it's breaking, that everyone is lying to you, that the world as you know it seems like a severly damaged & stupid place, and it is running rampant with grifters, conmen, liars, idiots, corrupt fucks, bullies & assholes all out to destroy your brain, your common sense & good cheer, you are not wrong. The Mad King of Chaos, Uncertainty & Bedlam Has Made his Stupidest Move Yet...

Yes. Call him the Mad King. Call him the King of Chaos & Uncertainty. A King with no wisdom, little fandom, and lots of stupid, cruel, corrupt ideas. Sure. Why not, King of Bedlam? We have called him every other bad name in the book, and calling up bad names gets extremely tiresome. Jesus. Can we all agree that that man in the White House is "a danger to himself & others?" Seems like an easy call. Yesterday, they say the Mad King of Bedlam has made his stupidest move yet. Shouldn't it be about time that someone locked him away in a rubber room? Give him a desk, a bed, a phone, and of course, a big, grotesque mirror so he can strut around like a fat chicken, and pose & pout, and act like a big man totally off his nut, & rig up his smartphone so that his Truth Social posts go nowhere, they would be launched into the black void, seen by no one, and, we could all try our best to forget him, bury his name in the mud. Sure, death, by natural causes, would be better, better for both him & us, but, in the meantime, rubber room for him, sweet peace & silence for the rest of us. We certainly don't need any more Chaos & Uncertainty swirling around in our crazy-ass lives. We have enough of that shite, more than enough, to go around.

Faith, Hope & Gollum...

I was gonna write about "Hope" & "Faith," inspired by Sarah Lyon's amazing post from November 7, 2025: "It's OK to be Hopeless."

She has decided to replace Hope, which she feels is disempowering, with Faith, which is empowering. Sarah Lyons: "I think it’s time we give up on simply hoping, and find something worth putting our faith into building. Hope is “what if”, faith, on the other hand is “even if.” 

I have leaned on the idea of Hope myself, but I get what she is onto here. Hope is sort just a vague cloud, that you want to surround & engulf you, but Faith is sort of something you have work for and towards.

And lately, the world, and current events seem to be loads of hopelessness...

I actually fall back on my own phrase: "You Must Believe." I even wrote a song with that title. Believing actively, and putting it to work. Now, of course, "what to believe," is critical. Believing is a tool, like any other, what you choose to believe can open the world or totally close it. Create or destroy? Good or Evil?

What do I believe in with all my heart & soul? The creative process. Working at it, doing it, being it, embodying it, as often as possible.

So, yeah, believe in simple, humble things like: practice, discipline, work, a better day, a better way, trying things, health & good cheer. And maybe believe in some complicated things like evolution & long-form improvisation.

I was gonna write about Sarah Lyons post, but then I came across this post & commentary from Paul Campos at Lawyers, Guns & Money, and I thought this is it, everything in a nutshell, the reason why hopelessness is rampant here in the USA, and we all feel like we are failing & flailing, no getting around it, we are under the thumb of a real-life, world-class turbo-charged Gollum. We are fucking cursed and the only way to banish it? Well, actually, Death, "... it will end when he dies."

We are in uncharted waters.

Just a random thought this a.m. 

If you are paying attention, and you should be, you are watching & listening to horrible people do horrible things to other people, either for no good reason or, more likely, for very intentional, horrible reasons.  You are also watching & listening to a group of demented people cheering these horrible actions on, or turning away and ignoring all of the shite. This disciplined, paying attention is probably not good for you, not a good way to spend your time, not good for your head, your spirit, or your good cheer. Still, bearing witness, seems to be part of the deal. You are dealt into the grand game, and it turns out paying attention is just part of it. You need to be fully alive, aware, awake at all times. You also need to detox on a regular basis, just for good hygeine & in pursuit of a determined well-being of being well. You know, a little self-care oasis in the sea of horribleness?

Standing Up Against the Thuggery in Minneapolis...

Yes. Paul Krugman this a.m. with "The Minneapolis Crucible." The ICE goons, thugs, fascists, are occupying, and terrorizing an American City. The good folks of the community are standing up, and protesting against this brutal occupation. They are doing their best to protect their friends, families, and fellow citizens from the brutality of oppression. Minneapolis is the latest front-line protecting our democratic ideals. 

It is heartening, and inspiring to watch the brave souls of a community rise together. The best of America in the streets, aligned against the thuggery. Americans armed with smartphones, recording the assaults and abuses of an occupying force. It brings the reality of oppression to each and every one of us. Maybe in this way, we can remake, re-commit to our democratic ideals. From Krugman...

Heroes in a Small Town in USA...

One of the more inspiring TV moments lately comes in Stranger Things, when the kids in a small town stand up to evil. They don't blink, they don't hesitate, they stare down the big guns, the burly military-types, and big, powerful evil one, and they get busy taking back the streets of their little town. And various versions of David Bowie's fantastic, beautiful song "Heroes," is sung, first by Peter Gabriel and then later by Bowie himself.

What is happening in Minnesota right now, is that same stirring, inspiring, kind of heroic response from the common folk standing up in the streets against ICE and Border Patrol. Below is reporting from the front lines, the streets of Minneapolis. Yes, Heroes indeed. ABOLISH ICE NOW!!!

Facing the Madness & Mayhem...

Yikes. Facing all the tumult, hurly-burly, madness & mayhem, one is struck dumb. Ha. I mean, of course, my mind is racing, my emotions are raging, there is a tornado swirling around in my body, and I find myself typing into an empty page, into the void, into the gaping maw. What to say? Hmmm. Maybe a certain silence is the best idea at the moment? A quiet fury, a disciplined silence enveloping me, in the face of the stupidity, cruelty, malevolence & evil insanity of my fellow human beings. One wants to take a shower, or a long bath, to the wash off the stink of humanity furiously at war with itself. Powerful, evil forces have been unleashed by the worst of the worst amongst us. We are all implicated, each & every one of us. Basic principles, hard choices are in the offing. How to right the wrongs? It's not going to be easy.

A Blurry Dream...

There is something to be said for "just making it." Even if, as the 12-steppers tell us, you sometimes might need to "fake it to make it." I am thinking of the benefits & certain good-will of simple, stubborn, longevity & endurance. Yes. Growing old, gracefully, or maybe not so gracefully, but with as much grace as one can manage. Live long enough, and life itself seems sort of like a blurry dream. Decades pass by in a flash. Turns out there is very little you can hang onto; there is the moment to moment, and the time to reflect on the moment to moment, and then, well, if you are lucky you still have your wits, your vim & vigour, a dash of energy & optimism, body parts continue to work, you are still curious about the world, and other people, still open to creativity, and changing your mind about things if the evidence of your senses call for a rethink. Life as long-form improvisation. Keeping your shit together even as you wade through the shit. Keeping a sense of humour, and a sense of proportion. A common sense grappling with a wild world.

Where are We Now?!

Our government is using our hard-earned-tax dollars to send well-armed goons into American cities, to brutalize, terrorize, kidnap, and murder our fellow citizens. They are lying about it all, hoping that we are just lazy dupes & dopes, who will believe their idiotic, easily disproven lies. I don't think this can, or will stand. Too many of us know that this is horribly, terribly wrong. There are brave citizens all across the country standing up and opposing this shite. A reckoning is in the offing. How soon do we get there? Not sure. But I do believe Truth & Justice will prevail. It won't be easy, but it is totally necessary.

We the People Stand with MInnesota...

We the people stand against murder in the streets. We stand against ICE. We stand in solidarity with the citizens of Minnesota. We will not forget Renee Goode, the young mother, so cruelly shot down. We will not forget the ICE goon who murdered her, and all the other goons who stood around doing nothing. Her murder was a brutal, vicious act; a cold-blooded murder. We will not forget those who lie about what happened, those denying reality, & re-writing facts. All of our major institutions are failing us. We stand with the common people, the average American citzens, those protestors, resisters, community activists showing such heart, courage & bravery, standing up against ICE in the cold streets of Minneapolis. We stand with all of our brothers & sisters. We expect Justice for Renee. This shall not stand. We all deserve so much better. Abolish ICE. Hold those responsible to account. Truth, Justice. The only way forward.

The Trump Adminstration Now Terrorizing, Kidnapping, Murdering US Citizens...

 

The Trump administration has declared war on Blue Citiies, American Citizens. It's a MAGA civil war come to our streets. Maybe in our hearts we all knew it would come down to them murdering folks, lying about it, and doubling-down, declaring that they will continue to terrorize, kidnap and murder.

It is appalling, disheartening, and unbelievable that a President, a Vice-President, Department Heads, Republican Senators & House Reps can get up in front of cameras and repeat lies that are easily disproven by multiple videos. I do think this is the Death of America as we used to imagine it. If folks won't even admit the truth about a murder of a young woman, the country is lost.

If the Democrats ever get the chance, we need a radical re-do. But that is just a glimmer in our eyes, of a distant future. In the meantime? Murder on the streets, terror unleashed from our own very powerful, well-armed government. Reminds one of Nazi-Germany, Stalin's Russia, all those other countries with long histories of Dictators, Strong-men, & criminal-states.

What do we have? iPhones, the right to vote, our better ideas. The right to protest, free speech; raising our voices, putting our bodies on the line.  It is certainly a lopsided battle at the moment.

"On MS NOW today, columnist Philip Bump broke down when talking about the shooting of Renee Nicole Good yesterday in Minneapolis. “I have a six year old,” he said. “And…seeing the image of the stuffed animals in the glove compartment of her car—really emotional for me and…what I take away from this is, for me that’s the thing that stands out: that this was a family that could have been like mine.”

Bump went on to emphasize that “there are a lot of situations, a lot of incidents that have involved ICE, have involved the government over the course of the past thirteen months in which there is resonance for other families in similar ways,” but what he hit on in his first reaction to Good’s killing was the one the administration must fear most of all. Good was a white, suburban mother, whose ex-husband told reporters she was a Christian stay-at-home mom, and Bump is a white man."

Abolish ICE, Demand Justice...

Folk #1: Protests are springing up across the land...

You don't need to be on "the Left," to be horrified by ICE & Border Patrol's Nazi-tactics; terrorizing, kidnapping, and murdering citizens in the USA. A young woman is murdered in her car yesterday in Minneapolis, just the latest outrage & tragedy unleashed by the inhumane thugs unleashed by this criminal adminstration. Anyone can see that this is intolerable. We must stand against, resist, protest, & demand accountability for the crimes these agencies & agents are committing. Sure "Abolish ICE," reform Border Patrol, bring the perpetrators to Justice. Oh yeah, and tune out the lies spewing out from Trump & his adminstration. They just won't, can't, admit the truth of their atrocities. They will lie over & over, even if & when there is video that totally shows they are lying. We must take back our streets, our towns, our country from these lawless creeps.

It Ain't Easy...

Yes. They lie and want to rewrite history (see previous post). And many folks just nod their heads and go along. It's so ugly. An ugly to time to be living in the USA. I spent a day spreading optimism around the neighborhood. Spreading the gospel of postive thinking. But, then, well, my optimism only goes so far. Not much beyond my neighborhood. My optimism is blended with a certain, disciplined realism too. And that realism is darker, bleaker, and maybe a little too hot to handle. It's a combustible combo, and the battlefield is inside me. Yikes. Watching the USA sinking under a tsunami of lies, bad faith, & bad action. It's a heavy duty job to take on; bearing witness. Must try to recharge, renew, reframe things. It ain't easy.

I Remember, Do You?!

We are now the people who don't remember anything. Too much history in one day to remember anything that happened yesterday. We are a nation of fucking lazy amnesiacs. Like remember when that disgusting fat-guy & relentless blabber-mouth pretended he didn't lose an election, which he lost by millions of votes, and then incited a crowd of burly, crazy MAGA's to try to stop the House of Representatives from certifying the results by storming the Capitol, beating cops, and crashing into the halls? It was pretty memorable in my orbit. It was on January 6, 2021. It's a day and event that should have been seered into every breathing American's fricking head. And, of course, that famous fat fuck should have been hauled off to jail, stood trial, and banished, or imprisoned for life.

Nope. Didn't happen. Unfortunately. And then, well, that very disgusting person won re-election in 2024. Yes, a bunch of stupid amnesiacs voted for that guy. Really. I know hard to believe, totally idiotic. He now holds all the levers of power in America. A criminal running a criminal enterprise, with nukes, and a huge army. WTF did we do to our to beloved country? Talk about self-destruction, and self-sabotage. We should all have our heads examined.

And what are the amnesiacs doing now? Streaming cat vids on Tik-Tok? Who knows?! We are now in the clutches of the worst of the worst amongst us. They are destroying the USA from the inside out. Does anyone remember the American Dream? Is there anyone out there who remembers anything? 

It's Acutally Quite Cosmically & Terrestrialiy Simple...

All the great Myths, Religions & super-entertaining narratives spring from the fountain of Zorastrianism, an ancient Persian religion. All Human Psychology too.

You should check in with Joseph Campbell and the "The Hero with a Thousand Faces," (1949), for an in-depth review.

Think of our modern myths: Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, Stranger Things. What is the everlasting theme? Good vs Evil. That is the background & the playground of our imaginations and lives. We love to read & to watch these narratives because Good always triumphs over Evil. We love these stories, because the stories always end in a very satisfying way. Good is rewarded, Evil is punished.

Of course, in our lives, in our reality, the battle is never over. And we often watch Evil win. It's difficult being a Human Being. We watch as bad things happen to good people, and good things happen to bad people. That's just the reality of our world. It complicates things greatly, no doubt.

We Human Beings have an ever-recurring choice. We are confronted with this choice every damn day. Every breath, every thought, every small & great act we take.

It's not complicated. Sure we live in a complicated, ever-evolving existence. But the fundamental choice is really, very simple. If you are a Zorastrian at heart there is the Threefold Path:

There is a Cosmic & Terrestrial war. Because humans are caught in the middle of this war, their primary duty is to support the side of "Good" through a simple but profound ethical framework:

By living this way, a person actively helps "strengthen" the side of good and works toward the eventual defeat of evil.

At its core, Zoroastrianism views the universe as a cosmic battlefield between two opposing forces: Asha (truth, order, and light) and Druj (falsehood, chaos, and darkness).

We Humans don't need to get hung up on the question of Why? There is a battle in every human heart & head. The choice should be obvious & simple but often isn't. We often watch Evil flourish and prosper and we wonder if that is the way. Sometimes being Good is the more difficult choice. Difficult but essential.

I think we "moderns" realize, despite our myths & stories, that this battle is never over, as long as human beings exist in this Universe, the battle, the choice always exists. This Universe is inevitably both Light & Dark, Order & Chaos, Truth & Falsehood.  All those elements are in us too. The drama & trauma is being worked out with every breath we take, every choice we make...

A Criminal Doing Criminal Things...

Not sure what to add about this latest Venezuelan attack from the USA. Gobsmacked. Sent me into a bit of a tailspin. My simple formula: Elect a Criminal, don't be surprised when he does criminal things. The USA is now a a rogue, mafia state, an existential threat to all that is right & good in the world.

We are led by a criminal, a very twisted & sick psyche & human being. He is a hollow, very weak, vindictive, dementia-leaning, man, who constantly wants to show the world he is strong. And, of course, he wants to continue his crime spree, without facing any accountability for his actions. Any grasping for answers about his motivations or reasons are a fool's game, and leads to lot of huffing & puffing and a certain madness. 

Expect lies, lies and damn lies.

One year into this latest Presidency and we are in the grip of a deep stupidity, cruelty & madness. Fuck. We are all under threat now. The only hope is in the hearts & heads of folks who oppose this shite. We must rise up. Or all is lost. Yes. Existential threat. No doubt.

A Brain, Writing About Brains...

Human Beings. It's a great subject. I'm just a human writing about being human living in a world with other humans. A brain, writing about other brains. It's kind of weird.

Thinking that we are a very resiliant, complicated, contradictory species. Strong, creative, improvisational. We are also quite fragile, vulnerable, & subject to the whims & storms of a sometimes benevolent, sometimes neutral, and sometimes quite hostile Universe.

Limits. There are limits. To our bodies & minds. We don't know what we don't know. There are plenty of things we can't do. Things we can't surmount. Each of us must experience & learn as we go. It's hard to reach beyond our senses five. 

Taking it all, one day a time. Thinking this is long-form improv, but time is limited, the improv does not go forever. Never sure when and where it all ends. Probably best to think it can end any moment, and live for each & every moment as long as one can. A Human Being doing human things, running out the string.

Is it bad juju, or bad karma to wish that something bad happens to another human being?! You know, even if that human being happens to be the worst of the worst amongst us? What is that magical phrase?! Cardiac arrest? 

Hmmm... I am not wishing for anything. Except, may that man get what he deserves...

Let's just say that one hopes that the ridiculous diet of the Great Mar a Lago White Whale reaps what it sows. I can't imagine what that McD Shite does to one's arteries & heart. But whatever it is, let it do it's oversaturated, empty-calorie best. 

All signs tell us the at the Great Mar A Lago White Whale is not a healthy person. Sick in body & soul. I do believe we are one last over-amped Happy Meal from being very, very happy indeed. Our nation's lonely eyes turn to you Micky D. Do your stuff...

The Killer Conundrum, 2026 Variety...

If you have read Cormac McCarthy's post-apocalyptic novel "The Road,"  (2006) (it is a worthy read), you know one of the key existential questions, that "the Boy" asks "his Father," after much drama & trama, and a long, winding journey across a bleak & scarred land, a question that sort of makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up:  "Are we still the good guys?" 

It's a question that this particular American is asking himself this particular morning, the 1st day of 2026. This country I live in has taken a very dark turn. The USA is being led by a criminal & a criminal administration. All evidence points to the conclusion that "No, sorry to say, we aren't still the good guys."

Crimes against humanity near & far. The USA now seems to be a force for evil, corruption, murder, greed, racism, white supremacy & idiocy. It's a major bummer. Makes living in the USA a very difficult proposition. A thorny, contradictory, porcupine-like existence.

 It's  a killer conundrum. I cling to a disciplined positivity as a basic & essential survival strategy, but also I adhere to a determined clarity. To see the world as it really is, not just how I want it to be, no rosy-colored glasses. Clarity. Stone-cold clear-seeing.

How to live a good life, knowing that crimes are being committed in my name every damn day? The only answers I can conjure up: Stay close to ground. Create music. Try to do my best to be honest, true, with positive thoughts for a better day and a better way. Love those I love. And resist, oppose the evil-doers,  refuse to along with the idiocy, and the bad actions of others, with every ounce of my being.
