Always Be Wary of the Coffee Boy!

If you read this blog, you know that I do HATE the current President. I know hate is a strong word. I don't use it lightly. I know I'm not supposed to hate, I try my best not to sully my spirit with hatred, but, unfortunately, in this case, it is the overriding emotion when it comes to 45. Let's say I am working on a joyous, forgiving, playful hatred of this man. Everything he represents, everything he embodies, everything he does, everything, evokes a deep in the bone loathing, dislike, disgust, and aversion...

Definition of hate
1a : intense hostility and aversion usually deriving from fear, anger, or sense of injury
b : extreme dislike or disgust : antipathy, loathing
had a great hate of hard work
2: an object of hatred

I am happy to report that 2018's Movie of the Year will be "Stupid Watergate." We can also expect a quick, followup sequel, Part II, entitled "Stupid Treason."

Looks like the Coffee Boy, George Poppa Doppa may emerge as the "John Dean" of "Stupid Watergate." Intriguing story. A drunken conversation in a bar tips off Australian Intelligence that 45's campaign is "colluding" over stolen emails with the Russians! Hah! You must always be wary of the "Coffee Boy," you never know, he may be the key boy who unravels a Presidency! Empowering for "Coffee Boys" all over the Globe!

"Don't fall down!"

A man slips and falls. Hilarity ensues. That's how it works in comedies and in the movies.

In "real life" a man slips on the icy porch, his frozen-solid boots lose their grip, slide forward, his weight shifts, his coffee cup flies from his gloved hand into the bush on the side of the stairway, and he crashes down with a sickening thud, finds himself laid out on the stairs.

There is a moment of stunned silence. "What happened?" A simple fall. Then there is the damage assessment. "Did I break anything?" Guess not. A sore lower back. A sore wrist. What is that word? Contusion - "injury to tissue usually without laceration : bruise."

Dodged a bullet. Amazing. No broken bones. No broken spirit. Just cold, damn cold, and sore and really, come on how stupid, how silly, how ridiculous. How cliche.

A reminder of something. What exactly? Every step counts. Danger any moment. You must always "watch yourself," be on guard. Hilarity and "tragedy" always trailing us.

Must always remember - "Don't fall down!"

It's Like a Life-Raft.

Hope. It's like a life-raft. A way out. A way to float out of harm's way. Sometimes it's real, tangible, easy to board. Sometimes it's invisible, out of reach, unseen, unseeable. And still despite the fog, the blurriness, the invisibility, you hope. You carry a spark. A flame. Inside. Even if everything else falls away. You are naked. Alone. There is still that glimmer. That's the last thing that goes.

Our "Grab Them By the Pussy President," is our Slobodan Milosevic!

This seems like essential reading from John Schindler, former National Security Agency Analyst and Counter-Intelligence Officer. Question: What Authoritarian Dictator is our Current President Most Like? Answer: Slobodan Milosevic!

"By the time Serbs figured out they had been conned, it was too late; the country was already wrecked, and Milošević managed to hold on until the fall of 2000, thanks to his control of the media and the police, enriching his family and his hangers-on every step of the way. That he was eventually extradited to The Hague to face justice seems inadequate compared to the devastation which Slobodan Milošević left in his wake.

You can understand the remarkable rise of Donald Trump in 2015-16 by simply exchanging “Serbian nationalism” for “white nationalism”: the parallels are eerie and disturbing. Trump, who never had shown the slightest interest in the plight of the white working class while he built his flimflam empire of gauche condos and casinos, suddenly reinvented himself as their champion. By telling angry and alienated people just what they wanted to hear, Trump created a political movement overnight and mysteriously rode it right to the White House.

Now that’s he’s there, President Trump has failed to deliver on his grandiose promises to his base. Chants of “Build the Wall” to preserve America’s current demographics have gone silent, while Trumpian populism turns out in practice to mean a cabinet packed with Goldman Sachs alumni and tax cuts for the rich. At this point, Trump’s manipulation of white nationalism seems every bit as cynically dishonest as Milošević’s Serbian patriot act.

So far, of course, America has avoided the fate of Yugoslavia. We’re a much bigger and richer country, and our economy, for all its structural problems, is a lot less troubled than Yugoslavia’s was in the 1980s. That’s the good news. The bad news is that Donald Trump has opened the same can of ethno-nationalist worms that Slobodan Milošević did, and if he keeps stoking those fires while doing nothing for his angry and alienated base, America could yet wind up resembling Yugoslavia a lot more than anybody sane should want." - John Schindler, The Observer

Still in One Piece...

Super-cold here in the Midwest. It's a challenge just to navigate the day. Everything is frozen, raw, harsh, hard, brittle. You think: It's easy to break. There is something about surviving. Something about making it to another morning. I mean, you don't deserve a medal or anything. Survival is it's own reward. But, of course, it does have it's limits. You push forward, and hope that you don't reach the outer limits of your exsistence for a bit longer. Maybe make it to a sunnier, warmer reality. In the depths of Winter, there are thoughts of Spring. But, you know, what's to be learned now? Right now? Warm is good. Staying in with loved ones, binge watching Netflix ("The Crown" and "The Get Down" are highly recommended), or reading a good book - for instance, Moby's memoir, listening to excellent music (Bowie's "Blackstar," Peter Gabriel's "So," King Crimson's "Red,") are good survival strategies. Recharging. Restoring. Re-vitalizing. Building up your energy. Counting all your fingers and toes. Being thankful you are still in one piece.

Be Here Now - Why Not?!

I guess it was Ram Dass who said it, or at least popularized it: Be Here Now.  "Be Here Now is one of the first guides for those not born Hindu to becoming a yogi, by a person himself not born a Hindu."

Right. Not born a Hindu. Put that on your resume. Anyway, this is one of those ideas that just resonates. Seems useful in all times and in all situations. I suppose that would be a good definition of wisdom.

If you find yourself on the road - drive. If you find yourself at a Steak House in the far suburbs - eat (If you are a vegetarian, make it Eggplant Parmesan). If you find yourself with people - talk and listen.

We spend so much time thinking of the Past, or planning for the Future. But it is the ever-vanishing Present where we make a mark. Do we want to make a mark? Do we really want to leave a footprint in the sand?

Maybe best to live lightly, try not to make a mess, or call too much attention to yourself, leave a clean room, pick up after yourself. Be. Here. Now. That's it.

A New Dream!

I do think this is the era of "resistance."   This is our time. Can we resist with gusto? With joy? With a full embrace? Resist affirmatively? That is the trick. So much going down that I am against. I stand in opposition to the general trend. Looking for an alternative vision. A new dream. Yes.

I Try to Simplify!

We lead complicated lives. The world, an interconnected globe, is vast and complex. So many people. So many viewpoints. So many opinions. So many competing interests. You want to be aware. Connected. Open source.

How to not be overwhelmed? How to navigate day to day? I try to simplify. To find hope in one excellent cup of coffee at a time. I often tune into my own little frequencies. I fill my life with music, books, great conversation.

I find hope in the new, in the tried and true. Take one step at a time. Stop and smell the coffee, and the roses.

I always try to create something. Something new. A song, a monologue, a morning post. I believe. In believing. In hope. A better day. Even in the darkness, the bleakness, in the midst of turmoil and pain, I think of the light. Just out of sight. Right around the corner. Something new, unexpected. A surprise.

That can't be squeezed out of me.

Maybe Not So Smart

Your next existential crisis is just around the corner. A smile, a gesture, a friendly little bulldog can be the trigger. Sends you reeling. A fall into the void. A void with no bottom. You question everything.

Is this the life we really want? Where are we going? Who are we? What the hell is going on?

You realize something is very, very wrong. Humans. So disappointing. We like to think we are the "smart monkeys," maybe not so smart.

Wreak Some Cosmic Justice!

If I knew a few Voodoo rituals I would know what to do. I would put a curse on the GOP. The party. In total. Each and every member. They are a danger to our government, to our country. Led by the "Grab Them By The Pussy" President, they are working on looting the public coffers to the benefit of their rich donors.

Disgusting!

You want to be fair-minded. Clear seeing. And I think I am. When a political party reveals itself to be a shameless vehicle for corruption, incompetence, greed, selfishness and bad actions, there is nothing to do but call them out, and call on all forces beyond the human, to come down and wreak some cosmic justice.

Of course, we need to vote these scoundrels out of office. But we also need some extra-human help. I curse you GOP. I curse you! From the bottom of my heart, I curse you!

Note: So yes, this morning, I turn out the lights, light a candle, place it in the center of the living room and chant up a spell. I put a spell on all those who harm children, who take money and support from the poor, who try to shout down the voiceless, who mock women, children, immigrants, those struggling to make it day to day. Those who feed their own greedy selves, who cut deals for the wealthy, who rob from the poor to give to the rich. I put a spell on all those folks. I demand justice. I demand that the cosmic powers come down on them with the heavy hand of karma.

They will get what they deserve... here's the soundtrack for this morning's Voodoo spell...

Devasting to Our Grab Them By the Pussy/Russian Asset President!

Yeah, I guess I'm not the only one who thinks James Clapper's comments (see previous post), on CNN are earth-shattering and devastating to our Grab Them By the Pussy/Russian Asset President.

From John Schindler in the Observer:

"Clapper went considerably further yesterday in his appearance on CNN’s The Lead, in which he finally let his top secret mask drop to say what he really thinks about our 45th president:

I think this past weekend is illustrative of what a great case officer Vladimir Putin is. He knows how to handle an asset, and that’s what he’s doing with the president … You have to remember Putin’s background. He’s a KGB officer. That’s what they do. They recruit assets. And I think some of that experience and instincts of Putin has come into play here in his managing of a pretty important account for him, if I could use that term, with our president.

What exactly is Donald Trump’s relationship to Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin? It seems likely that nobody outside Moscow knows the full story, and we should expect it will take years of investigation by Team Mueller and the IC to unravel this murky three-decade saga. The well-honed Chekist habit of planting disinformation to throw Western counterspies off course, which already seems to be at work in the Trump investigation, promises to drag this inquiry out even longer. Don’t plan on pleasant answers either.

Regardless, Jim Clapper has done our country a valuable service by stating the plain truth about our president. On CNN, he was speaking for all our intelligence professionals who must remain silent because of the lifetime secrecy oaths they took to join the Intelligence Community. After months of public White House attacks on the IC, which have now escalated into all-out war on America’s spies by Team Trump, there is finally some open pushback by the spooks.

This isn’t the mythical Deep State, which Trumpists detect lurking behind every tree in Washington. This was Jim Clapper, now a private citizen, speaking his mind as a highly experienced intelligence officer. The impact of his words can be fairly assessed as devastating to anyone who’s paying attention. Nor will Clapper be the last former spook to go public with his thoughts on Donald Trump and the Russians." - John Schindler - self-described historian, security consultant, author, provocateur, bon vivant, polyglot, counterintelligencer, cat guy. Former NSA, NAVSECGRU, NWC.

Yes, The Holy Shite Moment on CNN: The Grab Them By the Pussy Prez is a Russian Asset!

Yeah. This seems significant. I mean like a "Holy Shite Moment!"  James Clapper, former Director of National Intelligence admits the painfully obvious fact that our current "Grab them by the Pussy" President is a Russian Asset! I mean, well, of course, hell yes, but it's a bit startling to hear this long time intelligence dude say it in plain English.

Clapper is no slouch, no "partisan hack," check out his resume: James Robert Clapper Jr.[1] (born March 14, 1941)[2][3] is a retired lieutenant general in the United States Air Force and is the former director of national intelligence. He served as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) from 1992 until 1995. He was the first director of defense intelligence within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and simultaneously the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence.[4] Clapper has held several key positions within the United States Intelligence Community. He served as the director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) from September 2001 until June 2006. On June 5, 2010, President Barack Obama nominated Clapper to replace Dennis C. Blair as United States Director of National Intelligence. Clapper was unanimously confirmed by the Senate for the position on August 5, 2010. Following the June 2013 leak of documents detailing NSA practice of collecting telephony metadata on millions of Americans’ telephone calls, two U.S. representatives accused Clapper of perjury for telling a congressional committee that the NSA does not collect any type of data on millions of Americans earlier that year. One senator asked for his resignation, and a group of 26 senators complained about Clapper’s responses under questioning. In November 2016, Clapper resigned as director of national intelligence, effective at the end of President Obama's term. In May 2017, he joined the Washington, D.C.-based think tank the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) as a Distinguished Senior Fellow for Intelligence and National Security.

The "Grab Them By The Pussy President vs. Bobby Three Sticks!

Rumor has it that the "Grab Them By The Pussy" President is gunning for Bobby Three Sticks. I hate to have to worry about this possibility, but it is a possibility that worries me greatly. Why? It would be a distinct and determined attack on the fundamental premises of our Democracy.

Our country is founded on the Constitution and the Rule of Law. Our current President is running a quasi-mafia-like enterprise with no respect for either. And Bobby Three Sticks is like that shark in "Jaws." He is relentless. He is running down all leads, and all leads lead directly to the Oval Office.

It is obvious that the "Grab Them By the Pussy" President is a Russian Dupe who has lived on the margins of the law for many decades. Bobby Three Sticks is putting all the pieces together. He is working on the major story, the major investigation of our time. It is an ugly story of greed, hubris, stupidity, bad deeds and treasonous actions.

Funny. The GOP is helping to try to stop the shark. But there is no stopping this shark. Even if they "kill him" he continues to move forward. Relentless, voracious. I do believe Bobby Three Sticks will get his man. He is that kind of legal shark, that kind of American Hero.

If the Russian Dupe makes a move on Bobby Three Sticks, I believe all hell will break loose, expect a political apocalypse.

When you hear bad things about Bobby Three Sticks, remember it's just noise, it's disinformation. Remind yourself of his accomplishments:

Robert Swan Mueller III (/ˈmʌlər/; born August 7, 1944) is an American lawyer and civil servant who was the sixth Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2001 to 2013. A Republican, he was appointed by President George W. Bush and his original ten-year term was given a two-year extension by President Barack Obama, making him the longest-serving FBI director since J. Edgar Hoover. He is currently head of the Special Counsel investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections.

A graduate of Princeton University, Mueller served as a Marine Corps officer during the Vietnam War, receiving the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" for heroism and the Purple Heart Medal. After graduating from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1973, he worked at a private firm in San Francisco for three years until his appointment as an assistant U.S. Attorney in the same city. Prior to his appointment as FBI Director, Mueller served as a United States Attorney, as United States Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division and as Acting U.S. Deputy Attorney General.

In May 2017, Mueller was appointed by Acting Attorney General Rod Rosenstein as special counsel overseeing an ongoing investigation into foreign electoral intervention by Russia in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.[3]

Your life is more like the weather, than it is like checkers...

Your life is more like the weather, than it is like checkers...

You are changeable.
Unpredictable.
Moody.
Breezy.
Stormy.

It's not a game.
You don't win or lose.

You manifest.
You exist.
You drift and range.
You go places.

There is the Winter of your discontent
and the Spring of your new emotion
and the Fall of your rain-like tears
and the Summer of your steamy love.

And you are all of these things in a moment,
a day, a week, a month, a year, many, many
many, many, years.

Your life is the weather.
Not a game.
A phenomenon.

Do We All Suffer From PTSD?

Hey, if you plug into the World Wide Web, and pay close attention, live with you eyes wide open, it's not crazy to think that you may suffer from PTSD. I mean everyone of us. The daily onslaught of drama and trauma that dances across our eyballs is sort of paralyzing...

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)[note 1] is a mental disorder that can develop after a person is exposed to a traumatic event, such as sexual assault, warfare, traffic collisions, or other threats on a person's life.[1] Symptoms may include disturbing thoughts, feelings, or dreams related to the events, mental or physical distress to trauma-related cues, attempts to avoid trauma-related cues, alterations in how a person thinks and feels, and an increase in the fight-or-flight response.[1][3] These symptoms last for more than a month after the event.[1] Young children are less likely to show distress but instead may express their memories through play.[1] A person with PTSD is at a higher risk for suicide and intentional self-harm.[2][5]

Everyday War!

There's a war going on out there. Competing forces, competing ideologies. Nothing comes easy. Everything is a battle, a fight, a struggle. Is it a fair fight? Nope. There are no rules. It's brutal, ugly. Out of bounds. Something tells me that there is some Big Shit coming down. Keep your head low. Look out for falling shrapnel. Pray the pieces don't fall down on you.

Sometimes the Long-Shot Miracle is the Right Call!

Hah! Contrary to all those Bible Thumpers, I guess it's safe to say that God actually wanted a Democratic Senator in Alabama! She just couldn't abide that Republican Abomination. Surprise. Surprise.

Was it a miracle? Sort of. Think: an extremely outstanding or unusual event, thing, or accomplishment. Could it have been an extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs? Well, I mean, hell, who knows?

A Democratic Senator in deep-red Alabama... how could it be...? OK. Maybe not Divine Intervention, but how about a pretty cool Coalition of Voters, according to Perry Bacon Jr. of 538"Kind of befitting the Jones coalition, the crowd of Jones supporters was about one quarter black women in hats and about a quarter young hipsters, with a lot of older whites also in attendance."

Congrats to Alabama. The nation turns it's lonely eyes to you. I also want to give a shout-out to Jason Isbell who I wrote about here:  "One lone man, in the spotlight, battling feedback and reverb, singing his heart out for a long-shot miracle."

The Problem...

You see the selfish and greedy ones thrive. You see injustice all around you. You know it's not right.

Monday, December 11, 2017

A Good Question.

It's the kind of morning when you go to the great Google and ask, "what is objective truth?" Why do you ask this question? Because you hear people on the radio saying things that sound absurd. Because you hear people clinging to their beliefs, clinging to their arguments despite all the evidence. Clinging as if their lives depended on it. And how are they able cling so hard? They dispute the evidence. They make up their own evidence. They refuse to believe what they don't want to believe!

It's impossible to argue someone out of their beliefs.

We all have convinced ourselves that we can believe whatever we want to believe whenever we want to believe it. We have constructed this elaborate hall of mirrors. We don't see the world as it is, we see the world as we are. It certainly makes conversation difficult. It makes politics difficult, it makes compromise and cooperation difficult.

Maybe it's all impossible? How do we exit the hall of mirrors and meet in an open field where we can see the world clearly without beating ourselves and each other senseless with our opinions, our biases, our beliefs? Is it even possible?

Good question.

A Good Story...

Looking for good news this morning. It's a pretty lean morning for news of the "good" variety. Finally, I settled on this story: Jason Isbell: Voting for Doug Jones 'right thing to do'. Jason Isbell was born in Green Hill Alabama, now lives in Nashville. He did an acoustic set for Doug Jones, the guy running for Senator against, well, you know, that Republican Abomination. Funny, I guess it's a long-shot for Jones to win. It's that kind of Alabama we have now, that kind of Republican party, that kind of country.

Isbell did a free, get out the vote, 6 song acoustic set. I am a fan. Loved his work with the Drive By Truckers (see Decoration Day), and lately I've been stuck on "Something More Than Free." Funny, at first I was a bit underwhelmed, then I was overwhelmed, at first thought maybe I hated it, then pretty sure I loved it, now, I'm very sure I like it quite a bit. Isbell is a singer-songwriter of great distinction. Subtle, nuanced, a bit downbeat, or really a chronicler of the simply tragic. His songs are like Southern-tinged fragments of woe and beauty. For some reason I think of Jason as the Raymond Carver of singer-songwriters. Crystalline, downbeat, heart-stirring. Deep soulful imagery and stories of the "common folk."

So anyway, this is what I really liked about finding this story this morning. As a performer myself, this rings oh so true to life of a working musician:

"Clad in a plaid shirt, dark jeans and brown boots, Isbell was poised and relaxed, even as a sound engineer wrestled with feedback and initially applied cover-band levels of reverb to the vocals. Isbell was happy to just play his mini-novels of songs in a stripped-down fashion for a throng of superfans."

Death by the Sound Tech. I know it well. Anyone who has played music out in the world knows this story too. So yeah, this is the story of the "good variety" I found this morning. And I guess it's a smart story too. The good is always tinged with the bad, the sad and the sort of tragic too. Right? One lone man, in the spotlight, battling feedback and reverb, singing his heart out for a long-shot miracle.

Zombie President!

Trump is dead. He is the walking dead. He is a Zombie President. He doesn't know it. His followers don't know it either. Of course they don't. They are the brain-dead hordes. The brain-dead leader struts around and his brain-dead followers follow.

You almost think they are alive. But no, they are dead. For sure. They are just pure appetite. Voracious. Disgusting. Dripping with death. Rotting. From the inside out. Makes a sentient, sane person want to gag. Yuck!

It is inertia that carries them forward. Primeval impulse. Hungry. Greedy. Motor-skills intact, body supporting a hollowed out husk of a frontal cortex. Darkness, ugliness permeates every cell. Cells rotting, disintegrating, liquifying.

This Zombie President and his Zombie Hordes are living on fumes. Putrid, rancid, fumes. They won't last. They are dead already. The undead, slow walking to a certain oblivion. One day soon this horror will end.

A Prophecy: They Will Fall Like Bowling Pins!

A prophecy: They will fall like bowling pins.

Bad actors in all sectors. We are watching it happen now. Word is that many more men in the House and Senate will be accused of bad acts, and will resign. It is happening in Entertainment & Business too. It's a necessary cleansing. I didn't see it coming, but I also didn't realize how pervasive this problem of sexual harassment, intimidation and sexual predation was throughout our society.

So happy we have been awoken from our slumbers. So happy that women from all walks of life have spoken up. Now is the time. We must seize the moment. No silence. No holding back. Let's air it all out. Let's shine a light. We can remake our world. We can embrace a new consciousness. We can live with a renewed spirit of gentle grace, of respect, and community. Yes. We. Can.

Let the Republicans be the party of serial sexual predators and harassers.

Yeah. I am a life-long Democrat. Put me in the camp with those calling for Al Franken to resign. I think he's a funny guy, I have been pleased with his work in the Senate, I agree with his politics, but I do think there has been a change of consciousness regarding the issue of sexual harrassment, and it makes sense for the Democrats to take a principled stand of Zero Tolerance on this issue. I understand each case is different, there is a wide spectrum of behavior from the worst shit imaginable, to just plain rude and insensitive actions. But there has been a tsunami of accusations. It makes sense for Democrats to hold to the highest standard. Let the cleansing begin. Let the Republicans be the party of serial sexual predators and harassers.

Sick to Death of the Lying...

Yes this old song from John Lennon never grows old. I woke up this morning with this one rolling around in my head. I am so sick of the lies. We get a daily dose of lies (deliberately untruthful; deceitful, false), that pour from the lips of our President, that rain down us from the GOP, from multinational Corporations, from People in Power in all walks of life. We must not accept the lies. They all must be held to account for lying to us!
"I'm sick to death of hearing things from
Uptight short sided narrow minded hypocritics
All I want is the truth, just give me some truth
I've had enough of reading things
By neurotic psychotic pigheaded politicians
All I want is the truth, just give me some truth
All I want is the truth, just give me some truth
All I want is the truth, just give me some truth"

A holocaust of stupid. An apocalypse of stupid. A shit-storm of stupid.

I've exhausted my arsenal of insults. This man is such an ignorant blight on the country. His stupidity is a vast, never-ending river that overflows it's banks on an almost hourly basis. Whatever pops into his head, whatever comes out of his mouth, or finds itself in a Tweet, just gets more and more madly, deeply stupid! The country has never seen this kind of maximum idiocy on such a grand scale.

It is a blight. A plague. A holocaust of stupid. An apocalypse of stupid. A shit-storm of stupid. Prison. There should be a special rubber room prison where we can send this guy, a special place for the Pathologically, Narcissistically Stupid. He is dumbing us all down. Just listening to him, just reading his tweets, makes us all dumber by the minute! Help!!!

We're Totally Fucked!

It is a bit depressing, and bracing. Pretty sure my country is really messed up and I feel helpless. People in power just don't seem to give a shit about most of the rest of us. The Senate just voted for a tax cut bill that is really, really unpopular. That's not how Democracy - "a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free electionsis supposed to work.

It seems it's just more evidence that this Democracy is not really a Democracy at all. I think it's fair to say we live in an Oligarchy - "a government in which a small group exercises control especially for corrupt and selfish purposes."  I hate to be cynical this morning, but it sure looks like it's just a money game. And money loves money.

And really maybe it's more accurate to say we actually live in a Kakistocracy - "Government by the least qualified or most unprincipled citizens." I hate to think it, to say it, to write, but this morning it feels like we're totally fucked.

Do Our Part...

You'd like to believe your life is a comedy a drama of light and amusing character and typically with a happy ending.

But you suspect it might be a tragedy - a serious drama typically describing a conflict between the protagonist and a superior force (such as destiny) and having a sorrowful or disastrous conclusion that elicits pity or terror.

Or you know, maybe it's a hybrid, a comedy with tragic undertones. Or a tragedy with comedic overtones.

Maybe it's all a joke. Or just a sad tale.

As a character in the drama, what if you wake up? What if you ask in the middle of the show, "Hey guys, is this a comedy or a tragedy?" Would that be a way to change the gist of it? Turn it all upside down?

I Love My New Mop!

I'm serious. I mean, I'm not a product endorser, but I am a believer...

You think, wouldn't it be great if you heard a voice in the burning bush. Or what if the Red Sea parted in front of you? Or you were touched by the hand of God. Or Aliens abducted you and took you for a little ride. Or your life was filled with Angels or Flying Monkeys, or Little People, etc.

You wait for the big moment that will change your life. But slowly, over time, you begin to realize that's not how it works. Instead, there are all these little things that accumulate, add up, and transform you.

You know things like discovering Questlove's book (see previous 3 posts), or coming across Father John Misty's "Pure Comedy," or Roger Water's "Is This The Life We Really Want," or Lucinda Williams "The Ghosts of Highway 20," or Trader Joe's Vegetarian Chili, or Harbinger Coffee Beans, or a great new pair of Timberland boots (every step counts), a new pair of socks (ditto), a new travel mug, a fresh pair of black Levi's, or a new Diety to worship:  Ganesha!

Or walking along the lakefront with a little doggie, wearing earbuds, your iPod playing U2's "One Step Closer," and a moment of pure good feeling and connectedness sweeps over you.

Or...

Getting a new Mop! Yes. The Tornado Mop! Suddenly your chore is transformed. It doesn't seem like labor at all, no, just pure, unadulterated pleasure. You wield that mop like it's a sword made of Valerian steel. Dirt and grime just disappear. Really.

Small things have big impact. And a life is transformed.

Questions... Questions... and More Questions...

I haven't even finished the book yet, and I'm already on my 3rd post (see 2 previous posts),  about Questlove's great book "Mo' Meta Blues."

Why do I love this book? It's over-stuffed with ideas. It has gotten me thinking. It has inspired so many thought-trains. Lots of intriguing ideas. Questions. Many questions to ponder and ruminate over. What more can you ask from a book?

Questions? Yes, questions like:

What is a memoir? What is a man? What does it mean to be an author? How does memory work? What do we choose to remember, what do we choose to forget? How do you tell the story of your life? What is identity?

What is music? What is authentic? What is Art? What is Commerce? What is success? What is critical acceptance? What is artistic integrity? How do we all live a fruitful, balanced, sane life?

What is R&B, Rap, Soul, Hip-Hop, Neo-Soul? What's good? What's not good? What is enough, or not enough? Is it OK to question everything? What do we know? And how do we know it?

Is Questlove black enough? Are the Roots black enough? If a black act sells lots of records to white people are they less authentically black? What the hell does that even mean?

What a great book...

Ahmir Thompson = ?uestlove = Questlove!

Some folks, you read their stories (see previous post), you listen to them relate the facts of their lives, and it seems like it all rolls out like "destiny"a predetermined course of events often held to be an irresistible power or agency.

What is happenstance? What is circumstance? What is fate? What is luck?

A 2 year old Ahmir Thompson remembers a plastic drum-kit, and Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead" playing on the radio, and it almost seems like the hand of fate grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and propelled him forward. It is an awe-inspiring origin story.

Ahmir Khalib Thompson (born January 20, 1971), known professionally as Questlove (stylized as ?uestlove), is an American percussionist, multi-instrumentalist, DJ, music journalist, record producer, and occasional actor.

You think the story could only roll out one way. You know, the way that it actually rolled out. All the twists and turns are just part of the greater narrative trajectory. We are lucky to have a Questlove. Really, we are very lucky indeed.

Questlove's Universe - I Want In!

I am so happy I recently purchased Questlove's "Mo' Meta Blues."  I'm reading it now. What a great memoir. What an amazing musician and human being. I just love this man. A copy of the above photo is affixed to our refrigerator. Every morning I am greeted by this wonderful moment captured by the camera, such a big aura, such an infectious smile. Opening the refrigerator door, reaching in for the milk, that photo flying by me, it's always a great way to begin the day.

Soulful. Funny. Brilliant. A maestro. Questlove is ubiquitous: "existing or being everywhere at the same time." I am about 1/3 of the way in on the text, what a great education on music. Questlove is a music-obsessive. A total music Geek for sure. He's also one of the great drummers, a supreme music-obsessive. Reading the book, I am learning so much about some of the music that I'm not all that familiar with: Rap, Hip Hop and Neo-Soul.

Of course, I am quite familiar with one of his great collaborators D'Angelo. I have also lately been obsessed with D'Angelo's two fabulous records, "Voodoo" and "Black Messiah." They have been on heavy rotation around here for quite awhile. Just the finest stuff imaginable. Questlove's book is a revelation. I must say I have a boat-load of new albums that I've added to my wishlist.

Questlove and Mo' Meta Blues, highly recommended!

What Am I Selling?!

I don't go to the Mall when they tell you to go to the Mall.
I don't shop when they encourage you to shop.
I'm not interested in joining the herd, standing in line with all the others.
I'm always marching to a different drummer.
The drummer inside my head.
I like to be obsessed with the things that obsess me.
What am I selling?
Hope. I sell it every day. To myself and everyone I know.

Play Misty for Me!

"Mara taunts me 'neath the tree
She's like, "Oh great, that's just what we all need
Another white guy in 2017
Who takes himself so goddamn seriously."
She's not far off, the strange thing is
That's pretty much what I thought when I started this..."

Father John Misty (see previous post) has lots to say about a lot of things. He is oh so quotable. His record Pure Comedy got me interested enough to check around to see what else is on his mind. He is a glib, intelligent, articulate Messiah. Hell, I look for wisdom, humor and insight wherever I can. Father John Misty is what they call in the Newspaper Biz "a good interview."

Evangelicals & Trump (his parents are Conservative Evangelicals)

"Over the past 20 years, we've thought of conservatives as being these Buckleyite, moralistic, financially austere people who believe in dignity and free speech. With Donald Trump, we've seen none of them really give a shit about all of that. They're applauding him dumping a trillion ghost bucks into the economy and expanding the military and cutting taxes for the wealthiest. He is clearly not a Christian. What it shows is that the center of their worldview is a culture of resentment. That's the humming dynamo at the center of all of it.

What a crazy coincidence that the teaching of Christ sees to be so compatible with late-era capitalism, suburban isolation, rampant consumerism. And so I am not ever surprised when I see evangelicals contort themselves to justify supporting Donald Trump. There is so much animosity for Hillary Clinton in that world that people like my parents voted for Donald Trump."

Women in Pop Music (he has written songs for Beyonce and Lady Gaga)

"There's just so little dignity. I know half a dozen women in the industry, and it does treat them like human cattle. Around the Nineties, the industry decided it didn't want to work with artists anymore because they're a pain in the ass. They realized, "We just need people with dreams of being a pop star. Not people who work to make music – people who submit to anything it takes." This hilariously incoherent idea that feminism is the byproduct of that world drives me insane.

Also, a lot of them tell me that they look at my experience in the indie world and they go, "God, I would give anything to be able to do that, to have the freedom you have."

Father John Misty - The New Messiah?!

Our brains are way too big for our mothers' hips
And so Nature, she divines this alternative
We emerged half-formed and hope that whoever greets us on the other end
Is kind enough to fill us in
And, babies, that's pretty much how it's been ever since

Now the miracle of birth leaves a few issues to address
Like, say, that half of us are periodically iron deficient
So somebody's got to go kill something while I look after the kids
I'd do it myself, but what, are you going to get this thing its milk?
He says as soon as he gets back from the hunt, we can switch
It's hard not to fall in love with something so helpless
Ladies, I hope we don't end up regretting this

Comedy, now that's what I call pure comedy
Just waiting until the part where they start to believe
They're at the center of everything
And some all-powerful being endowed this horror show with meaning

Oh, their religions are the best
They worship themselves yet they're totally obsessed
With risen zombies, celestial virgins, magic tricks, these unbelievable outfits
And they get terribly upset
When you question their sacred texts
Written by woman-hating epileptics

Their languages just serve to confuse them
Their confusion somehow makes them more sure
They build fortunes poisoning their offspring
And hand out prizes when someone patents the cure
Where did they find these goons they elected to rule them?
What makes these clowns they idolize so remarkable?
These mammals are hell-bent on fashioning new gods
So they can go on being godless animals

Oh comedy, their illusions they have no choice but to believe
Their horizons that just forever recede
And how's this for irony, their idea of being free is a prison of beliefs
That they never ever have to leave

Oh comedy, oh it's like something that a madman would conceive!
The only thing that seems to make them feel alive is the struggle to survive
But the only thing that they request is something to numb the pain with
Until there's nothing human left
Just random matter suspended in the dark
I hate to say it, but each other's all we got

Are you waiting for a New Messiah? You know, the "smeared" or anointed one? If you, like me, were brought up in the Catholic Universe, and then rejected it, and then moved on, inexplicably, you are attracted, and sort of predisposed to the search for a New Anointed One. Yes. It's a failing. Either a lack of Imagination. Or maybe a manifestation of a tainted, over-active Imagination. Whatever.

You need to find a Charismatic Figure. It could be a Woman, or a Man. If it's a Man, it helps if he has long hair, a beard, an appealing voice, a way with words. The gift of gab. Maybe he sort of sounds like a 2017 LA-based Elton John. You also need a good origin story. For instance:

"Amid interpersonal discord, creative frustration, and turning-thirty discontent, he split town in an Econoline van, with a big bag of mushrooms, and meandered down the coast. One day, he went for a hike, and, as the psilocybin kicked in, he began to shed layers of clothing, until he found himself perched on a limb, stripped bare before an indifferent universe. Scratching himself, he thought, I’m an albino ape, and I can do whatever I want. He realized that he didn’t have to identify himself exclusively with his disappointments as a musician or with his bitterness about being in someone else’s band: “I should just be myself.” “Myself” was a funnier, more playful, more self-lacerating—and just plain lacerating—version of whoever he’d tried to be as J. Tillman. He returned to Seattle, packed up his things, moved to Los Angeles, and started working on a novel. He recognized his voice in it, in a way that he hadn’t in his music. After a while, he picked up a guitar and started writing songs again, and these, too, seemed different. One of the songs was a country-rocker called “I’m Writing a Novel.” The hook went, “I’m writing a novel, because it’s never been done before.” This is when he invented the alter ego of Father John Misty—or, in his rendering, discovered a truer self and gave it a name."

Yes, Father John Misty. I just discovered his 3rd record "Pure Comedy." I have only listened to it 3 or 4 times. I don't care what anyone else says, I am a believer. Count me a follower. I am in the Father John Misty Flock. I immediately put his other 2 records on my wishlist. I must get down the the root and core of the Father John Misty creed.

He may be a False Prophet, a Fraud, I suspect even he doesn't know whether he's for real or not. But that's the kind of Messiah we need in this oversaturated, Social Media Mad time. Self-Reverential to a fault. Too smart for his own good. Too Self Aware. So self-aware, he's aware of his own self-awareness. He makes that a feature. A Man willing to prostrate himself on the Alter of Self. A Self-Made Shrine and Sacrifice on the Altar of Self.

There is comedy, and wisdom to be found in Father John Misty's vision, plus the record sounds amazing, rich, layered, well done all around... I believe. Yes. Indeed.

Yes, I'd Go with Sunny Side Up!

This is funny. And true. I have been doing some outreach efforts for our band and have been in communication with various folks in the Music Industry...

I traded emails with a "Music Industry Professional." He told me that our band whitewolfsonicprincess has a "Scrambled Egg Appearance," which he could help change for some $.

I told him to forget it, that we consider our band appearance to be "Sunny Side Up!"

The Partisan Asshole Gap!

I do think there is a massive "change of consciousness" on Sexual Harassment and Abuse happening at the moment. It's an amazing time. As Rose McGowan (the "Joan of Arc" of the movement),  puts it: "This is the FIRST TIME IN HISTORY that women have been believed. I am proud."

I say let the chips fall where they may. We are watching major figures in Business, Entertainment, Politics getting rocked. Lots of bad behavior all around, and finally Women feel empowered, willing to speak up.

Seems like a necessary cleansing. Still, as Kevin Drum points out there is an "Asshole Gap" between the Left and the Right, between Democrats and the Republicans.

Kevin Drum: "There’s a partisan issue here, but there’s also, for lack of a better phrase, an asshole issue as well. If you’re fundamentally a decent human being, like Franken, you apologize. Then you get investigated. Then you might resign, because lots of your fellow decent human beings think you should. But if you’re an asshole, not only do you deny the charges, you do your best to smear the accusers. That’s what Moore and Trump have done. This gives your fellow assholes the cover they need to back off while they “wait for more evidence.”The result is that the more decent you are, the more likely you are to pay the price for your sexual misconduct. The more of an asshole you are, the less likely you’ll pay any price."

Yes, the Asshole Gap. Leaves us with the "Grab Them By the Pussy President" in office. It's a problem. But I don't think it will last.  I do think the Assholes will ultimately pay a price. I guess we shall see.

Song Exploder is a Revelation!

A musician friend of ours turned us onto Song Exploder. What a cool Podcast. A musical artist discusses one of their songs, explains how it was created, and takes you thru the elements of creation. 122 Episodes and counting. If you are interested in music, if you listen to it, or create it, you will be inspired and informed by this show.

About the show: "Song Exploder is a podcast where musicians take apart their songs, and piece by piece, tell the story of how they were made. Each episode is produced and edited by host and creator Hrishikesh Hirway in Los Angeles. Using the isolated, individual tracks from a recording, Hrishikesh asks artists to delve into the specific decisions that went into creating their work. Hrishikesh edits the interviews, removing his side of the conversation and condensing the story to be tightly focused on how the artists brought their songs to life."

Listen to a few episodes and I assure you, you will find that you start to listen to music with new ears. We have been jumping around listening to various artists, for instance, some that we know well, own some of their records, including: Iggy Pop & Josh Homme, Byork, Spoon, My Morning Jacket, Wilco, Norah Jones, Angel Olsen, Andrew Bird, U2, Will Butler (from Arcade Fire), The National.

And some artists that we don't know well at all, but after listening have put their records on our wish list, including: Courtney Barnett, Fleet Foxes, Sleigh Bells, Natalia Lafourcade, Tune-Yards, Garbage.

Since we are in the middle of our own musical project, this is all so fascinating. We've learned so much. Can't wait to do some more listening. Highly recommended!

Appreciation is in the eye and ear of the beholder.

This column in Vulture on Louis C.K. ("Louis C.K. is Done"), touches on something that I have been wrestling with a bit.

"When disturbing stories about respected artists come from the distant past, we treat them dispassionately, as just one detail among many. Present-tense or near-present-tense revelations hit us differently because we share the same world as the artist, breathe the same air, feed the same economy. We think of them as contemporaries, even as people we know. This kind of revelation changes the relationship between the artist and the art, in a way that places an unasked-for, unfair burden on the audience. This is what’s happening culturewide. And it’s not the fault of people who didn’t report it, or audiences who aren’t sophisticated enough to separate the art from the artist. It’s the fault of the artists for being secret creeps or criminals, and the fault of the system for making it possible for them to act this way for years without being punished."

How to separate the Art from the Artist? Not sure it can be done. Or I mean, I can't do it. If I find out that an Artist I admire is a horrible person, or has horrible qualities it does destroy my appreciation of the Art.

I mean, I know all Artists are only Human. Human Beings. And all Human Beings have flaws. Really there are no Saints. Even the Saints, if you probed deep enough, well, I'm sure you could find some creepy, disturbing or disappointing things about them. That's the Human Thing.

Humans are complicated. Confounding. I am always amazed and inspired by the Art that can emerge from Humans. Sometimes the best work is channeled from difficult circumstances. Sometimes that is what gives the work meaning, gravitas.

But there are some things that just can't be overlooked. Sexual Predator? Secret Nazi? Mean to kids and animals? White Supremacist? Racist, Misogynist, Homophobic, Xenophobic?

Maybe great work can emerge from a Horrible person, yes, I'm sure it happens all the time, but it certainly destroys the connection I have with their Art. Some flaws are just not acceptable. So the "great art" becomes not so great. Appreciation is in the eye and ear of the beholder!

Of Course, There Are The Retro-Thinking Ones Too!

Hey, this is funny. I wrote a couple posts (please see previous two posts), feeling pretty good and positive about how Women are the solution to some of our current problems.

But, then, yesterday, I paged thru a copy of the New York Times and came across this photo. Sometimes a photo says more than a thousand words, right? Ideas and visions are always in conflict. Take any position and you can find plenty of folks rallying around the opposite proposition too.

Not all Woman are working towards a solution. Some Women are also clinging to an old picture, they are actually part of the problem.

There are the forward-thinking ones, and the retro-thinking ones. Here's hoping the forward-thinkers outnumber and out organize the retro ones...

It Will be the Women Who Pull Our Asses Out of the Fire!

Words of advice from Michelle Obama:

“Focus on what you can control. Be a good person every day. Vote. Read. Treat one another kindly. Follow the law. Don't tweet nasty stuff.”

I love this Woman. If there is any hope for us as a Species, as a Planet, as a Country, as a Society, it will be the Women who pull our asses out of the fire.

Yes. It will take a Village. Cooperation. Respect. Cool-Headed-Ness. Dignity. Intelligence. Grace. Oh, yeah, and Love. Deep, Soulful, Healing Love.

The Patriarchy Crumbles, The White Goddess Rises!

The Season of the Witch.  If I remember my Wizard of Oz correctly, there are good and bad Witches. Witches are women with magic powers. Also think of a "Woman or Girl who is Bewitchingly attractive."

All this hurly burly, toil and trouble in Social Media. Seems the Patriarchy is imploding. The White Goddess is rising. Some folks, for instance, that Alabama candidate for Senator dodging sexual harassment/predator claims, is calling it all a "Witch Hunt."

Funny thing, it is, but not in the way he means it. No, they are not searching for a Witch that doesn't exist, yes, the Witches (the good and bad, the bewitchingly attractive) are doing the hunting! And they are calling out the bad actors amongst us.

So what happens when the Patriarchy falls? Do we replace it with a Matriarchy? I don't think so. Concentrated power, whether it's male or female is just not a good idea.

I propose a Meritocracy(merit, from Latin mereō, and -cracy, from Ancient Greek κράτος kratos "strength, power") is a political philosophy stating that power should be vested in individuals almost exclusively based on ability and talent.[1] Advancement in such a system is based on performance measured through examination and/or demonstrated achievement in the field where it is implemented.

Believe in the Amorphous!

True Believers. I do think we all need to believe in something. Maybe believe in believing? But I think it works best if we choose to believe in big things, things like, "A Better Day." You know a big, amorphous, inclusive idea that gives us hope, motivates us to put our boots on and face the day. A big idea that's not specific, it's open-ended, it is easily adaptable in the face of conditions on the ground. Conditions on the ground are always in flux. Your big idea needs to be able to adapt, to incorporate, to include these conditions. As they say, "Reality has a way of catching up with you."

You don't want to cling to very specific things like this book, this person, this political party, this theory, this religion, this way of doing things. Too narrow. Too easy to mislead you, too easy to disappoint you, to lead you astray.

Maybe believe in small things, like a varied diet, a good night's sleep, walking, speaking softly, being gentle and kind. Believe in listening, empathy and compassion for all living things.

Believe in the wonder of the world. Believe that everything you know could be wrong. Believe in a better day, a better idea. Everything else needs work, verification, a testing of hypotheses. We need to sift through data, check our sources, be open and willing to change our minds. Daily.

The Sea of Guilt!

Guilt. It's useful. Living in the material world, there are so many facets, angles, interconnections. So many reasons to feel guilty. Look at the food on your plate. Or the vehicle you drive. The place you live. Where you work. How you spend your free time. We are all complicit in crimes and misdemeanors of varying degrees. That's modern living. That's what being engaged with the world means. We are complicit. We are responsible. We are responsible for all that we do and think, and all that we don't do and think. It's that classic Existentialist idea, we are responsible, accountable for everything. Everything counts. It's a heavy duty thing. A burden and a mission. It's not fun or entertaining. It's a life, bounded, surrounded, swimming in the Sea of Guilt.

I Have Walked with a Zombie!

I think some of us are fascinated by Zombies because we recognize ourselves. Maybe to our own horror. We recognize that pure, unbridled, unquenchable appetite. Driven by hormones, driven by forces in our bodies, in our heads, that we can't control. All that mindless Needing, Wanting, Grasping. Raw, Unwashed Consumers. Consumers of flesh, of life, of blood, of sex.

Scary to see in another, wakes up something in our consciousness that implicates us too in that Zombie Drama. How often have we lived on automatic pilot? Without thought? Pure action, pure motion? Mindless? Without reflection. Without understanding. Without restraint.

Go to any bar or night spot. Watch your fellow human beings fill their bodies with intoxicants. Watch them dumb themselves down, watch them numb themselves, watch them Zombify. Reaching for a certain Oblivion. I have been a Zombie too. I have walked with a Zombie. Haven't you?
